Am I right in understanding that in two years the senate / representatives elections will take place and the Democrats could take back both houses? I would assume, if we all survive that long 😳 that this would blunt him in terms of his executive powers?
My limited understanding is that 1/3 of both houses face re-election every 2 years which would mean the standard term is 6 years. However the majorities are so slim that changing 1/3 of the people could potentially reverse control, easily.
Also I would note that one Maga member of congress has already introduced a bill that suggests Trump can be elected for a third term as their reading of the constitution is that Presidents are only limited to 2 four year terms if they are consecutive. the USA has only once ever before had a president that did non-consecutive terms, Grover Cleveland in the 1890's.
Of course should such an ammendment pass then surely Barack Obama would also be eligible for a non-consecutive third term.

Anyone who voted for him deserves everything they get. It's not like this stuff wasn't out there.
Quite frankly this is my feelings for the entire country.

You knew this was a possible outcome and the country let this happen.

The ones who didn't vote for him didn't do enough to get others not to as well.

You're all Americans and this is your elected leader threatening your former allies.

We won't have any sympathy when it all goes it's up.

You have no idea what it's like here

Much, much easier said than done.

We're at the beginnings of a social civil war. Families don't talk to each other any more - friends ghosted. There is a dividing line that is almost impossible to cross. There is no reaching a certain subset of people.

The list goes on

Which was discussed ad nauseam in the old 2024 election thread

Here's the skinny

435 House members, up for re-election every 2 years. They are always campaigning. The problem with this body is that the election maps are set by the states, and many of these states have such GOP control that they fix the maps to ensure they always win. It's called gerrymandering. How does this work? Well you have party affiliations in a database, and these people take zip codes from one area and include it with other areas, diluting Democratic voting power. So what you get in these states is several super, super Democratic districts, but mostly the rest GOP, as Democrats are diluted. North Carolina is a bad example of this - a generally 50/50 state that has way more Republican members of Congress than it "should" (10 vs 4). So you end up with, of those 435, something like 150 actually up for grabs every election. If you want to have a laugh, take a look at the Congressional district maps in pretty much any US state. It's not done by simple geography.

100 Senators, 2 from each state, with 6 year terms. 1/3 of whom are up every 2 years. These are usually the adults in the room, but as we've been seeing in the age of Trump is that there is no bottom for these people either. In super GOP states the Republican will always win. The problem with the Senate situation is that since you get 2 from each state, you have super GOP states like Wyoming with fractions of the population of Blue states like California and New York, so Democratic power in the Senate is diluted here as well because of that. And there are a lot of those non-urban Republican small population states. This is THE MAJOR REASON why Republicans do not want statehood for the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico - these would be viewed as 4 Democratic Senators.

Democrats are at a disadvantage, by and large, due to the above, especially in the age of right wing media and social media. Nothing changes because Democrats have been successfully vilified and otherized to large amounts of the populace.

I have some idea because it was starting to cross the border until Donny started throwing tariffs around and everyone remembered they're Canadians not Republicans.

At the end of the day the only ones who can fix your country are Americans themselves. Complaining that it's difficult will get you nowhere.

You won't sway those set in their ways but you might persuade the 81 million who chose not bother voting.

It very much appears like "Well we've done nothing and we're all out of ideas".

Who is actually doing ANYTHING to prevent this from continuing to happen?

I'm not pointing fingers at anyone here but it very much seems as if your entire country has given up and conceded to MAGA, and if the rest of the world doesn't see the reasonable ones amongst you raising an almighty stink it distinctly gives the impression that you're all indifferent to it.

Yeah but we ended up with Boris Johnson despite all the signs clearly saying it would be bad for the nation. We are, sadly, so embarrasinlgy alike and so embarrasingly stupid as nations.

appreciate the anger, and all of it justified, but there is a lot of disjointed fact in what you've written. for your part, make sure to let your elected officials know what you want them to do, how to proceed at the world stage. we'll rejoin the conversation, provided we're still around.

The Tango Tyrant being classy as ever, demanding one-sided concessions under the threat of genocide.
