Writing off James Beattie

Player Valuation: £100m
Understanding that this might not be the most popular post i have ever written. But i think we may have written this lad of to soon. Clearly and evidently he has never hit the heights that we expected when we signed him. While i beleive that much of the fans frustration comes from players that we know have the quality but havent been able to show it at the club for a variety of reasons.

My mind takes me back to when he was at southampton and some of the corkers he scored for them at times he was unmarkable. This promted an England call and a scramble for his signiture. Lets face it we were all delighted when he signed for us. Ok ill be the first to say that he hasnt lived up to expectations in fact he has been disapointing based on the money we have paid for him and the goals return.

But a few points in is defence

A) Since he arrived he has largely played as a one up fornt striker and a target man to knock balls down on coming midfeild players. Can you blame the lad for doing exactly what the manager has asked of him.

B) During his time at southampton he played with twoout and out conential wingers strecthing defences and allowing him more room to break form deep and position hinself in the centre.

d) his career with us has been stop start through injury the emergence of Johnson, moyes tactics/asking him to play a certain role.

e) The lad has taken on bored the critisicim and his lack of goals and is undoubhtedly a confidence palyer.

I feel genuinely that his loss of form is a result of a lack of confidence, the system that moyes playes preaticularly without wingers, and the role i.e. the traditional dunc role that moyes is asking him to play.

If as seems likely he may leave in the summer i will be dissapointed that the club didnt rally bring out the best in a player who undoubtedly pocesses quality. But admittedly i myself am dissapointed that things havnt gone aswell for him as we all had hoped, while i would be lying if i said i wasnt frustrated at times in his lack of confidence.

But at present he will be an Everton player untill the end of the season and though i may be in minority i would give him another year at the most. With this in mind i would love to see fans get behind and support him more as he s undoubhtedy lacking in confidence reather that ability. I think that admittedly what might be blind support and faith may really give the lad the lift he seems to need to get amongst the goals, what can it hurt we cant sell him now so ouronly option is to back him and get the best out of him as much as possible. If we could get some goals out of him he could prove a secret weapon in securing Euorpe if Moyes really goes for the Jugular to wim games.

I would hate that when the time for beatte to go comes (and it does seem soon) that we never saw the best of him.

good post btw bur personally i just don't think hes up to it. Whether he's been starting or not, up front on his own or as a 2, his scoring record is very poor, and i don't really see what he's offering the team. id love it to happen for beattz, but surely we would get more out of starting a pacy, aggresive, hungry forward like vaughan.

Beatties confidence is all over this place, due to fickle fans constantly abusing him and on his back, he cant do nothing right without a fan slagging him off.

James is a top player, he has proved that at Southampton, not alot of players score 20 + goals in a season, it aint exactly luck is it?

I have a fella who sits behind me constantly slagging him off and its so frustrating, i get absolutely slagged off on kipper aswell for sticking up for him, hes one of my favourite players and i will be 100% behind him until he goes, whether hes forced out due to our fans or sold.

I know he can do it, his form last season was good, his 11 goals got us something outta a shameful season, i was looking forward to a goal fest with AJ and Beatts, obviously AJ has it but Beattie hasnt, only 2 goals and they were from pens which he took well, if he gets a number of games on the run then im sure a player like him will not have a goal drought.

Come on James, im behind you mate!

From a less than reliable site but If the Mido for Beattie rumour had some merit in the last window I think unless something changes Beattie probably will be gone.

Whether it was due to being overweight, fickle fans because he couldn't live up to expectations or just playing out of his niche in the 4-5-1 Moyes liked he just didn't make the grade.

I have to admit last game against Watford he looked leaner so maybe there might be a little hope. But in truth if four million was offered I see him leaving myself.

BT was purchased as an out and out goal scorer, he has failed in a very big way, no excuses it has been his fault. If he has been unfit BT let himself get that way, ffs he is getting paid nearly £40,000 a week for producing nothing. Since his arrival he has led our front line to its lowest ever scoring return in any season since the club was founded. People defend him by saying we don't play to his strengths yet you could write a book about the misses he has made, Saturdays blaze over from 5yrds was close compared to some of his clangers. He has not scored an outfield goal for nearly a year, some players have had shorter careers. Normally I don't like the fans getting on players backs but at times it becomes obvious that the player in question should not be in the side, BT is a prime example.

Big Vic at least gets stuck in, puts himself about. He got swamped by the Spurs defenders, seemed like a fish out of water, not much difference to how BT has appeared for absolutely ages.

I admire all of you who are sticking up for the lad in someway, he doesn't deserved it, imo your loyalty is totally misplaced. The born again BT just won't come about.

Undersand your point Monty and i like you am not far away from giving all hope and agreeing to cut our losses for his and the clubs sake. But on analyseing why the likes of Beats and A VDM get me so worked up is that you know there is quality there.

Very good point about the lad having to take responsibility for his own fitness and lack of form and i agree that this is part of the variety of reasons why it hasnt happened for him with us. But thinking of how to get to best ut of him is not by barrackiong or criticing him but to encourage him. Like it or lump hes one of us untill the end of the season at least and by the sounds of whats comming out in press releases over the past few days he may be in line for an extended run in the team. I suppose the point i am making is how can we influence him to regain the confidence and ability he once had in abndance. The only way for me is to support him as best we can.

Call it blind faith, naievity but as long as he hes wearing an Everton shirt i will have hope that he will come good and will support him in trying to acheive the same, to reach the greater goal of a successfull end to the season.

I guess despite what people say i know they will do the same.

The value in the debate i suppose is what draws us to Everton and football in general which are opinons, wrapped in queston marks rolled in enigmas. I guess its a matter of sitting this one out untill the end of the season and making a judgment on the rights and wrongs with the benifit of hindsight.

Hahaha - four years on and Moyes still does exactly the same to every striker he has.

I don't actually think Beattie was a bad player until we utterly ruined him.

Ha ha badly vaulted here.

TBF he hit some kind of form 05/06 a scored a few.

There is a classic about Jags as well after that Arsenal game Jan the same year - i wouldnt like to name names apart from my own.

Haha! yes, mate i was his biggest fan - he was our first big money signing in ages and was actually decent until he had second season syndrome ( that sending off on his debut didn't help )

Lol i remember going mental when we sold him to Sheff Utd for half what we paid for him. TBF Moyesy has a way of turning good strikers into gash ones then shifting them for a fraction of the cost.

Lesson to be learned here lids. The Jags one really is classic if anyone can find it.

Someone posted here recently we don't have a striker coach at the club, makes sense really we have never produced decent striker apart from Rooney who is one in a million, and seemed to have regressed any strikers we buy.

Its a fair point, Davey seems badly gash with managing or coaching strikers over a two year period, when you look at all his ace signings none of them are forwards - even the young ones with potential - hopefully apocalypse can break that mould. Our system doesnt help either tbf.
