Own a petrol car at the moment, however for work and with petrol prices being high, im getting a Seat Ibiza 1.2 TDI (does an average of 80 mpg!!!)

Went for a test drive today and was surprised how different it feels, so much louder, cant hear the engine as well, and a lag from when you accelerate, but you feel the power, and it gets almost double what the majority of petrol cars get!

Opinions? I hope i manage to get used to the noise etc..

It's the torque you are feeling mate. Diesels have all the torque down low, plus they don't like to rev, so welcome to life with a 3k redline.

I say get it, gas isn't getting any cheaper, and making the most of the fuel is the way to go these days.

I got an old Audi A3 turbo diesel last year and wouldn't go back to petrol now. The performance isn't too far behind the Golf GTI I had before it. Similar BHP (A3 110 new, GTI 115 new) but the power on the A3 is all at the bottom and in the middle and therefore much more useful, whereas the GTI didn't get going properly until about 2500-3000rpm. Uses about half the fuel, too.

Got a Golf GT TDI and it rocks, its my second diesel and I don't think I would go back, unless I win the lottery and buy an Aston Martin. Like Dylan says, all the action is at the top end ... you soon get used to it.
The only down side, diesel pumps always leak and diesel stinks, plus it csn knacker your skin so , wear those plastic gloves when you're filling up

No, sod mileage, the sound is atrocious.

If you want to save petrol:

1. Don't buy a big gas guzzler if you can't afford to spunk money on it.
2. Don't rag any existing car you own.

Simples!

My Audi is quieter inside than my Golf GTI was. Mainly due to the build quality. And the sound of the turbo (almost) makes up for the sound of the diesel engine.

All my company cars have been diesal, they've all been wicked fast off the lights. Unleaded is the dark ages.

Are you one of 'those people' that go around telling people what they should be doing and saying 'Simples!' in that meerkat voice at the end?

You are, aren't you? You're one of 'those people'.

Just sold our seven year old MG for an 530D M Sport. The one previous owner had it re-mapped to give 270 horses and averages 50mpg. In carbon black with 20' rims it looks the mutts nuts and goes like a stink.
