Having been on the dole before though (for some time I shall add, whilst trying to improve my situation by volunteering in various roles) I take exception to when people single out JSA claimants and other benefit claimants. I can assure you that 99.9% of people on the dole currently are like I was back then. There is a minority who look to play the system of course, but that is par for the course everywhere.

Been there done that and of course I refer to the minority who choose to take advantage of the system.
To use the football analogy the harder you train the luckier you will get. Keep going .

I'm not jingoistic; I've never gotten that element of Britishness. I don't believe we are the best country in the world or that we should be able to swat people aside with our passports due to us being of superior stock. That's a load of tosh.

But I am proud to be British. In the way that I'm a scrappy guy who is usually very placid, is ultimately a well mannered man and who endeavours to treat everyone he meets with respect and humility. But when prodded and provoked; when my family is threatened or my sense of justice and fairness is pricked, then I'll make sure you get a damn good hiding. You'll either be left looking like an idiot because I'll embarrass you and walk away, or I'll give you a clip and you'll learn that I'm actually a lot better at providing the flint to my gas than you...

That's what Britishness means to me. Being proud; not patronising. Being astute; not asanine. Being gentlemanly; not gung-ho. Being humble; not humiliating.

It's about stepping into the middle of something and either diffusing it, or teaching the aggressor who underestimates you a bloody good lesson.

It's about being an underdog.

That's why I'd fight. To protect. To repel. To stand for principle.

Not to be powerful. Not to sabre rattle.

And that's what's missing from British society these days. It's increasingly about gain; reputation and glory; personal fulfilment and gratification; immediate return and mercenary profit.

Until we regain that, I'll still be proud to be British, but I'm not going to fight for those values...
 
To be honest this is why we have infantry soldiers.... mainly made up of lads who left school at 16 with no qualifications who have a choice between flipping burgers for a career or the army. .. doesn't take brains to pull a trigger
