The result was depressing but all too predictable.
What is it with Everton and checking back on to their other foot? Lost count of the number of times that Ndiaye, Grealish and Dewsbury Hall check back on to their other foot last night.
Is it a deliberate tactic or is there just no movement in the box?

Probably answered my own question here🤦🏻‍♂️
Lack of pace to skin a man on the outside and also little confidence in a teammate being in the box for the cross.

My slightly more rational take, following a kip:

I’m fine with changes for cup games, I just think the team selection was wrong and imbalanced. I think Dibling needs ballers on the pitch with him, not coming on for him. Ultimately, big failure by Moyes but I WILL say that he made good, early subs to his credit.

I said it last night but it bears repeating: Don’t win against West Ham and this turns into a poor start to the season.
He only made the early subs because he realised he'd cocked up

What they did at Roma suggests that TFG won't be overly patient. In fact they may be aiming to sell the club on by 5 years time, in their mind the sale being that of a top 6-8 club competing in Europe. I doubt if anything less is their ambition, difficult though it may be, and meanwhile the whole footballing world knows Moyes' ceiling. Is it not almost certainly the case that his best achievements in the game are behind him, 4th in 2005 and the Conference Cup a couple of years ago?
If Moyes is to take us where TFG want us to be, he needs to change a few things, including starting games on the front foot, not playing players out of position, and not calling out the board and some of the players to cover his own back, and of course good recruitment (will be be trusted with a good budget year on year?) Maybe he'll personally be content with 10th-ish for the rest of his career with us, I don't know. For the fans, is that OK, what with new owners and a new stadium?
I'm not sure TFG at Roma is or will be quite the same thing as here, although I agree they wont have infinite patience. On the one hand they had Mourinho deliver them a trophy, and on the other they've proven not to be afraid to cycle through managers if they feel it required, so who knows.

I'm sure they'll want Europe and trophies, but so does every other ambitious and successful billionaire owner in the Prem. It's easier said than done and it's not even just about the manager, it's about having a high quality squad that can achieve those aims. Right now we're a long way from that, so until that is addressed one transfer window at a time, mid-table finishes and cup exits might just be how it goes in the short term.

Lack of pace to skin a man on the outside and also little confidence in a teammate being in the box for the cross.
lack of a pass on the outside because neither fullback will risk it and there seems no FB trusted to put even an average cross in.
Once the ball reaches a wide player, it's either a moment of magic to beat a defender (or two) or it's a backwards ball. All sides have to do is hold up or kick Grealish or Ndiaye and all our momentum is killed. So one dimensional, and Grealish is waking up to the fact he's getting nothing from referees.
What annoys me is, we're an easy puppy to kick, we don't have a single player kicking back. All this talk about 30 years since a trophy, well it's been 30 years since Joe Royle's 'dogs of war'. 'Puppies of woe is me' since. Where's the fight, the battle, the never say die? Need to grow up this lot, it's not a tickling contest.

Which is all you can ask if the cock-up is already made, right? Mistakes are gonna happen so it was good to see him rectify it early. My bigger worry was how toothless we still looked even with the big boys on the pitch.
My biggest concern is we don't play for our strikers ,it's as if they're just thrown up top isolated and told to get on with it

Very annoying. A poor team selection compounded by some extremely sub-par individual performances, resulting in a collective stinker.

Firstly; Moyes swapped out far too many players in the midfield and forward areas, and we had no real rhythm or patterns of play that allowed us to retain the ball or penetrate higher up the pitch. Putting Seamus and McNeill on the same side was a bad call, pace -100. I thought removing Barry at half time was also baffling, he had absolutely nothing to work with given how clunky our approach play was and I think he would have benefited from the introduction of more quality players behind him. Taking off Charly over McNeill was equally shocking.

Secondly; I can in some ways understand Moyes offering individuals the opportunity to prove themselves (although they must be given the chance to do so in a semi-structured environment, which I don't think the starting line-up offered). Nevertheless there were some howlers in there. I thought Tim offered nothing in the middle, McNeill was shocking, Charly is making a habit of miscontrolling simple balls and turning possession over cheaply, and I thought Dibling on the whole looked disinterested. Players need motivating to play well, but part of that is down to them.

Lastly; I thought the centre halves had stinkers. Off the ball they were both caught out of position at various points and were both culpable for chances we conceded but it was on the ball where they were most disappointing. Tarkowski on several occasions ran himself into a cul de sac and had to boot the ball into no-mans land as a result. Why not go back to Pickford? Better than playing hope footy. Keane displays zero ability to recycle aerial balls and just put his head through it on a multiple occasions where he had enough time to bring it down or cushion a header to the full back or one of the midfielders. Our complete inability to recycle possession, retain the ball for longer periods, or even progress the ball on the floor from defence into midfield, can be traced back to Keane and Tarky. This is a bit of a trend this season, both absent on the ball for long periods and prone to sudden lapses in concentration when defending. My how we miss Jarrad. An area to look at in January if we can afford it, IMO

I know he's injured at moment honestly hoped we get delap these 2 aren't giving me any hope...pray one of them starts scoring regularly soon

Shock horror, just seen the score. We are out of the league cup and have left the field wide open for the RS to win this prestigious trophy. I have not read any comments since yesterday evening when the score was 1 nil, but I will bet there is loads of hysteria, I told you so etc etc., plus a few dark hints as to whether Moyes goes before Potter.
Win on Monday and forget it.
