Winslow Hotel - RIP

Oh no. Terrible news. Are many people going for a pre match drink in the pubs up near Goodison?
We took advantage of the later kick off against Newcastle to head up to Goodison and have a few beers up there. There were less than a dozen people in the Winslow, including us. Barlow Arms was similar. Royal Oak was the busiest and seemed to be doing ok. Not sure many in there were blues going to the match though.

As Bluewolf says, Winslow was/is a match day only pub anyway so wouldn't have any locals/regulars to fall back on once we moved.

Heard they are or have got involved at Meraki up Dickson Street?

Yeah same, we had a pint in The Oak and that was reasonably busy, then a few in the Black Horse and it was the same, steady trade but seemed kinda half and half with customers who'd be going the game and customers who were just out for a drink on a Saturday afternoon.

Are you saying that the women's game doesn't attract the same footfall to the economy? But surely they deserve equal pay! Somehow.
No, im saying it was quiet all around and in the Winslow, but notably busier than when the women played at Walton hall park.

I think the club could have done more with the local businesses for the womens team.

Of course everton women and the women’s game currently attract less footfall, hopefully that will change.

We need to be successful on the pitch and keep investing in the women’s game for that to happen.

They may not deserve equal pay yet because of the economies of scale, but they do deserve respect and support.

I would like to see the state of the men’s game if it had been banned from being played anywhere for 70-odd years mate.

Don't get me wrong, im a big supporter of the women's game. I coached girls teams in the early days of its revival in the 90s.

But when the pros start banging on about deserving equal pay, whether or not they get the same interest or footfall, it gets under the skin - just the sheer stupidity of the claim - as if economy isn't relevant. Maybe if their own sisterhood supported them better by filling up Goodison each week they'd be able to achieve better pay - but the bleating is always done, it seems to me, on the grounds that its down to nasty old males being sexist.

And I'm very much in the camp that men footballers are stupidly overpaid too ... there's too much money swilling about the game and it attracts the greedy, not necessarily those who love the sport.

I was born at home about 100 yards from The Winslow, grew up seeing the pub and the ground every day. Had my 1st legal pint in there with my Dad and briefly dated the managers daughter in early 80's ! Used to go in sporadically as the The Oak and The Springfield where my go to boozers back then.
Had a pint in there before the last Goodison derby for old times sake. Sad news if not unexpected but will always have fond memories of the place.

The people who own it are opening a new place on Dickson Street near the new ground called "Dixies", hopefully they move some of the memorabilia from The Winslow to the new place, Its in a bit of a side street though and obviously not as close to the ground as The Winslow was. On a match day now it feels like the closest thing to the Winslow is The Bramley Moore pub. It is opposite the ground, has that old pub feel and its rammed from about 2 hours before kick off.

What always wound me up about the Winslow was that one week you could pay card the next week it was cash only. On more than one occasion in there I would get served and then on payment it was suddenly cash only that week and I'm stood there with only a card and no cash.

This

And many other businesses too

TBF pubs are closing at an incredible rate all over the country. I've still not got over the closure of my local which shut it's doors for the last time in April 2024.
Now it's a Special Needs School. I pass it every day and feel sad every time.
The Winslow was obviously able to survive for so long because of it's reliance on match day traffic.

I went into that Ten Streets Social before the Forest game, never been there before. Good atmosphere, 2 massive screens. loads of bar staff so really quick to get served, I went in the front bit and was served within 5 mins, went and stood at the back bit with the benches and was once again served really fast at one of those kiosks they have set up. Only a fiver for a pint of Guinness as well.

Is ‘The Spellow’ still going? Im going to Leeds game and had plan to do a pub crawl from The Winslow to Bramley Moore…Any suggestions for route? Was thinking Spellow, Harlech Arms, ??
