Man City won the league just 4 years after receiving massive investment.

Athletico made huge profits in the transfer market which enabled them to invest in a team capable of winning the league.

Even with that noone really expected them to come close to the likes of Barca and Real.

That's the thing though, no other teams have the same quality of those ages coming through. They may have a couple but not almost an entire team.

but.... the rest of our league also get the money leaving us exactly where we are now. FFP will be abolished. the really big clubs are either ignoring it or bypassing it and as soon as French Clubs start getting punished for it Platini with get rid of it.

It was only brought in because Platini wanted to put the brakes on English and Spanish clubs to give the French Clubs a chance.

Why cant we build to win the league?

We have a couple of potentially world class players and possibly more incoming and developing others.

That's it exactly. A team like ours can never build to win the league but if our younger players hit that kind of form, like Suarez or Bale before they're poached it's always possible. Even so it would still be a one in a million.

Are Chelsea going to still be up there with no Terry and players like Hazard may fancy going to spain / psg as has been runoured...

We might have a good young team in 3 years time but that good young team isn't going to defeat a team with players such as Matic, Hazard, Costa etc. who are also relatively young and far superior ability wise.

I think McCarthy and Besic will be top notch defensive midfielders. Also barkley will be slightly more advanced with a playmaker slotting in also-- thats the key in the centre, a playmaker.

Definitely need a playmaker, someone who will get thier head up and drive forward with the ball. I think that's what we hope Barkley will develop into
As good as McCarthy is, do you think he has the intellegence to play that holding role for a championship challenging side? Barry 10 years younger would be ideal

Nothing is stopping us building. Just pointing out that the other teams have the same if not more money and they will also be trying to win the league....

We are coming from a long way behind and haven't got the cash to make the leap in one season to proper contenders. While the young squad looks quality it is hoping an awful lot for them all to become the players we think they can and not to have them cherry picked by the big guns along the way.

Nice to dream though and better than a couple of years ago when Moyes left and many were saying we would be relegated within a couple of years.

I'm pretty sure a team like Chelsea will replace with equal if not better players whenever the day may come. 3 years time though? Hazard will still be there and they'll have replaced Terry.

Of course they will. They can go out and spend to bring in the replacements

I'm becoming very positive about the way were moving forward under Martinez. Last year was an eye opener but mainly because of several players proving that theyre not good enough and Martinez now knowing who/what he needs moving forward (as shown by the Lennon loan).

I would say he's 2 seasons into a 5 season plan to get us into the top 4 consistently and possibly even challenging for the title. He constantly talks about our 'core' of young players and if (and its a big if) we manage to sign up Garbutt and Deulofeu in the next two weeks we will go into July with this core for the next 3 years of his 5 year plan:

4-3-3
GK-- ?
LB -- Garbutt 22
CB -- Galloway 19
CB -- Stones 21
RB -- Coleman 26
DM --McCarthy 24 / Besic 22
CM-- Barkley 21 / Cleverley 25
AM -- ?
LW -- ?
CF -- Lukaku 22
RW -- Deulofeu 21

EDIT - avg age 22.3.

Obviously it's also a squad game but if we can bring through players like Ledson whilst recycling other players out (McGeady/Mirallas/Howard etc) then adding in some quality to fit into this core of 19-26 year old players then we will be some side.

If we can add in the necessary quality to this core group over the next three summers, just how far could this team go?

For me, if we could fill those 3 positions which are empty at the moment and sign Garbutt and Deulofeu up we look very strong... i dont know any other club with a young core as good as this.

Surely this is our chance with Martinez to mould the side into a top 4 club and also challenge for the title...i'd say 3 years for this side to be challenging if two players are added to this core every summer.
