Nymzee

Player Valuation: £150m
Personally I’m too young to even remember this team, when I started properly getting into football was around the time they were talking about being shipped out to Milton Keynes. However, ever since the fans decided to resurrect the club as AFC Wimbledon I’ve always kept a keen eye on results etc. as I think it’s a brilliant little project of heritage.

However, as GOT is filled with many members much older than me, I’m looking for people’s opinions and accounts from around the time they began their rise from the Fourth Division up to the 1988 Cup win.

Were they really as nuts as the Crazy Gang moniker says? Did they actually have decent players? Were they more aggressive than day Revie’s Leeds team?

Are there any good articles, videos, films etc. you’ve read about them?

It’s just well before my time but I find it fascinating.

Bit unfair to call it a heritage project. It's a living football club that was forced into existence because of the ridiculous decision to allow the franchise club to move.

The original Wimbledon - not as crazy as the moniker suggests more just 'wacky' and then nasty lads - the guys who are going to force you to drink crap shots at an office party. Really boring to watch. Dennis Wise was a good player.

Also, I am no expert but, as is the way, I will viciously attack anyone who says they know better

I listened to a good podcast on the rise of AFC Wimbledon. That’s not really what you are after but it’s a great listen.

Return to plough lane it’s called on Spotify.

We were really good and played lovely football. They were increasingly annoying yard dogs, with the odd likable character and the occasional footballer (well, Dennis Wise). Then they beat Liverpool and we all loved them for several hours. Then we stopped being good and they gave us the fright of our lives.
Then they kind of went away and we heard terrible things happened them, and it was sad, but we had our own problems and even though no one deserved that, they had been horrible bullies and I never understood why people thought it was OK for Vinnie Jones to do those things, but still, moving to Dublin could be interesting, oh it's Milton Keynes, that's terrible, and didn't something like that almost happen Oxford and someone else becoming Thames Valley Rovers or something, but then I had to try to stop caring about football for a bit because Everton kept making me sad.

Well, I call it that because I’d imagine when they first got together (think I read there were like 300 people) then that’s really what it would have been. Doubt many would have believed they’re in League 1 and almost back at Plough Lane.

Not trying to nitpick, but it was started to continue the football club that meant so much to so many, it wasn't about preserving the heritage, it was about continuing the spirt and identity of the club, it doesn't really matter where they are in the league. Think it is an important distinction to make

That old Wimbledon team of the late 80s early 90s had some decent players like wise and fashnu who TBF at the time used whatever advantage they could to gain an upper hand on whoever they were playing against and I would of certainly had them two players over some of our signing around that era like Mike Milligan and mo Johnston. I suppose there attitude was if you can't handle it that's your problem . We had some good battles aginst them esp when vining Jones got sent off for going head to head with ratcliffe never a butt but he fell for it I remember Goodison being angry that day .We played them 1/4 final fa cup 89 McCall scored the winner that was a crazy celebration that one .At plough lane it was always a tough game and if you dident match them 9 times out of 10 you lost .And they went and turned the RS over in the fa cup final when everyone including me thought it was there's . I don't suppose what they done will ever again from 4th division to 1st in about 6/7 years I think it was

Carried out a couple of assaults on Tottenham players which nowadays would have resulted in very lengthy bans but probably weren't even booked at the time.

John Fashanu on Gary Mabbutt was basically GBH and Vinny Jones on Gary Stephens nearly ended his career.

Personally, apart from beating LFC in the cup final, i am glad they disappeared into obscurity.

Lots of "wacky" dressing room "banter". Suits set on fire, car keys down the toilet etc.

Aside from that, the odd good player, mixed with a load of evil cloggers. Cultivated the image to make teams wary of them.

Wimbledon in their prior form were a bit physical and not exactly a thrilling side to watch, but they did have some good players and did very well in 1997 to make the FA Cup Semi-Finals

For me, they'll always be the team that we beat 3-2 to stay up in 1994, that'll be their enduring legacy

I'm too young to remember the 88 Final, but for that alone they should be congratulated for their services to football ;)

I remember the cup final fondly, but to a man they were complete out houses and for the most part hacked their way through games. They did have a couple of decent teams though.

So last time they played MK Dons, Wimbledon got into trouble with the FA for not acknowledging the word Dons in the programme and only put MK on the scoreboard.

They play again tonight and they haven't produced a programme and the scoreboard is 'broken'.

Super stuff.

I was actually in the Liverpool end at that Wembley final and it was almost as good as being at the Watford final when we won lol Talk about meltdowns, one lad was trying to take on anyone who wasn't showing that they cared enough or some such nonsense.
