Wildlife in your Garden

Took these pictures of Greenfinch in the garden yesterday and noticed that both these birds have been ringed. Unfortunately I've no way of knowing when or where, but presumably they were ringed fairly locally (and recently) as the second one looks to me to be a young (this seasons) bird.

May have been ringed as part of a study somewhere into " Fat Finch " disease ( there`s a Latin name, I won`t even bother with ).

Their eyes, throats and beaks get all gummed up, causing them to starve to death.

It`s been pretty brutal with their population and Chaffinches too.

They`re on the Red List for concern due to the population plummeting.

Used to see them all the time in my garden, not seen one for a couple of years now.

Same here mate, used to see them all the time when I was out running and I learnt to recognise them from that raspy noise they make.

I think I saw one pair last year and so far have heard one, but haven`t seen a single one.
Yes i could hear that song coming down the chimney when they were sat on the aerial.

Good question! I had been feeding hedgehogs for years in my previous house, they have fairly distinct poos tbh. We have done everything we can to encourage them in to our new garden and it seems to have paid off.

Will put my trail cam out tonight, get some footage.

….only ever seen one in my garden and it was after coming in from a session but I’m sure it was actually legging it around the place. Seems so odd thinking back.

This is most people’s story. Late at night, in the shadows… there’s a hedgehog
Although they’re struggling in this country, they are much more prevalent than people realise - they just keep different hours and spaces to us.
