McCarthy would benefit massively from being made Captain. It will make him raise his game. I remember hearing Howard Kendall talk about giving Speed the Captaincy as he believed it would boost his game the most. Same applies here some players thrive on being Captain.
They were progressive choices, giving the armband to speed then duncan, improved both players, created new leaders, under Moyes and now martinez the armband is just handed down to the next most senior man, missing an opportunity for it to be used as a motivating tool

Well, Block.....it is not a question of "rewarding" people.

Goodness knows, Jags has had bad patches of form and has kept the armband......as indeed he should.

TBH I think captaincy is more than merely about form.

Phil Neville was a decent enough skipper for years whilst being pants most the time :(

Fully agree on that Khal, it's just that for me, TH would be entirely the wrong choice.
If it's down to 'seniority' then I'd suggest Gareth Barry.
However, he's not available tonight so don't be too shocked if Ossie starts and is skipper for the night.

Agreed. I'd give it to McCarthy on this basis. He's a good player but can go into his shell a little at times. The extra responsibility might be the motivation he needs. I really can't think who else would get it tonight considering Jags, Barry, Howard and Osman aren't playing.

You shouldn't need a captain's armband to come out your shell or raise your game. Personally I'd give it to Coleman, experienced enough and not afraid to bollock team mates or the ref.

I'd like to see Stones getting the armband, as much as a statement of intent as it is the belief he'd be an excellent captain and already carries the authority to warrant the choice.

What better way of saying to Stones "this is your home, a place where you can achieve your personal ambitions, and possibly the team's ambitions also".

With the run of games we have coming up, whilst none are easy, they represent a great opportunity to blood him in the role of captain.

Imagine having Naismith as our captain though, they would be dark days.

McCarthy should be captain tonight, then Barry once he's back from suspension followed by the beautiful Baines once he's back.

I would vote for an early Stones captaincy in the hope it might keep him onboard BUT given the choice I would have gone for a Kevin Mirallas captain role as it would just be controversial icing for his petulant performances!!! He would be a mercurial el capitan!

I cant believe 55 people have voted for McCarthy. The very defenition of average.
I'm staggered it's not a landslide in his favour. He's the only player who looks remotely arsed on the pitch when a decision goes against us and gets animated with the officials about it, and he's a the type of player who does a job that's required in any PL outfit and has done it very well since arriving at the club.

Jagielka is useless as a captain; Barry it would not make sense if you're looking to the future; Stones hasn't got the seniority or authority.

It's going to Ossie and so it should. While he might not have always been the best player for us he has always been a hard worker and a popular figure in the team. I would much rather see Ossie with the armband over Barry if they are both playing. I can't agree with giving it to Stones because I still believe he wants to leave no matter what.
