Who will be this World Cup’s James Rodriguez?

I’ve been trying to think of the breakthrough players from every WC I can remember,

1998 - Michael Owen (globally?)
2002 - Ronaldinho
2006 - Ribery
2010 - Muller?
2014 - James,

That about right? Any earlier ones ?
1994 - i always remember Hagi and Stoitchkov but maybe they were stars already

Lozano or another of our "targets" meaning his price will rocket and will end up elsewhere.

One of the joys of the WC is seeing players you’ve vaguely/never heard off seize the day. Given several unexpected teams qualified and traditional powers failed there are lots of intriguing players in second and third tier teams this year.

Lozano is a decent shout to be the new James as the hot young player in a half decent Mexico team (and someone Brands knows well). I think this is a huge tournament for Morocco’s Ziyech who seemingly cannot escape Holland but has a chance to earn a move to a big team in a big league. Arguably the best player in Holland last year was the Iranian winger with the difficult name (Jahanbakhsh). We were also linked to the ‘Iranian Messi’, Azmoun in the past and he has a chance to reignite that hype after a difficult time with injuries.

Looking to South America Tapia for Peru could get Brands’ eye as a young South American MF playing in Holland who is a born leader. Betancur of Uruguay who rides the Juve bench, could be another young MF who breaks out and truly establishes themselves globally confirming the promise that saw Juve take him in the first place.

Of the Europeans Golovin & Cheryshev (linked a lot to us in late Moyes/early Roberto era) both made early moves yesterday but Rebic is a good shout to convert the chances created by his talented Croatian team mates. Two other young forwards, Switzerland/Schalke Embolo and Serbia/Benfica Jovic could make their careers with a flashy goal or two. It will also be interesting to see if & how Martinez uses our reported midfield targets from last summer Tielemann’s (so-so at Monaco) and Dendoncker (Anderlecht).

It is a pretty open tournament with quite a few groups where the second qualifying spot looks very open and that creates lots of opportunities to shine. Fingers crossed for a perhaps surprisingly great tournament.

I don't think there will be one.

James rode a rocketship from out of nowhere to Madrid in less than five years, which was ultimately fueled by the 2014 World Cup.

I honestly think that clubs learned a thing or two in the intervening four years and that no club is likely to repeat overvaluing James.

Yes, even Perez.

Has anyone said Harry Kane? Score 5 or 6 this summer and he will be considered the best number 9 in the world

Kind of think the answer to this question is going to be “no one.” The best players at this World Cup are already well-known names (Mbappe, Kane, etc.) and most of the breakout candidates are from countries that are already out of the tournament.
