..questions like this are really difficult because some players time at the club was fleeting. Rather than asking who was the best, it’s probably better to ask who was the most effective Forward for Everton.

Factoring longevity, ability, teamwork and success i’d certainly go for Graeme Sharp. The likes of Rooney and Lineker were fleetingly outstanding. I wasn’t the biggest fan of Alex Young, whereas Joe Royle was the only other worthy of serious consideration.

@Frank Halfcoate this is a solid explanation for why Lineker is sometimes left out of such discussions.

Got to be the great Roy Vernon for me, devastating turn of pace, great striker of the ball, ace penalty taker and great captain on top of that. 101 goals in 176 games just incredible! Proud to say I was at GP for most of his games, and his link up play with Alex Young was a sight to behold.

Always enjoy hearing about Roy Vernon, sounds like he would be excellent in todays' game too.

Shamefully I never knew about him. Very good goals-to-games ratio!
Think he had a bit of a bad attitude if I remember right but he was a big strong lad who could bang 'em in! Iknow I sometimes look at our distant past players through rose tinted glasses but I'm sure any on that list would walk into our current "team"!

Your views, and those of other older heads in the forum, will be fascinating too in the next thread about midfielders. I'll start that one up at some point.

Fred Pickering was a superb striker. Was injured in the 0-0 derby game at Goodison in March 1966. Went down, no tackle involved. Only got back to fitness at the Cup Final stage, but was not risked by Catterick. He was never the same after that injury, unfortunately. I was at his debut for us when he scored a hat-trick in a 6-1 win against Nottingham Forest at home. I was at Goodison earlier in the season also, when he came with Blackburn and absolutely murdered our defence! 70 in 115 appearances for us is some strike rate!

I have, due to my advancing years, a rather poor memory now, but I remember both those games like they were yesterday! You're spot on, he absolutely murdered us for Blackburn then the next thing he's turning out for us! Thanks for reminding me!
