Who going to replace Barry?

How about that young lad we've got, Eric Dier? I think we will need a big money signing to cover this area, along with a striker when Lukaku leaves. Admired Morgan Schneiderlin a while, but this depends on whether he gets more or less game time at United.

We'll see how McCarthy does this year and Besic when he comes back. Looks like Koeman preference is to have the three midfielders and three strikers.

I have noticed this year how teams have abandoned having two out and out defensive midfielders, favouring only one. This depends on the system, but them across the park don't play a defensive midfielder at all.

Importantly, at present I don't think Koeman is looking for a creative midfielder in that central attacking role. He pretty much plays a standardised 4-3-3. So I think a defensive midfielder will be high on the priority list. I think we can do better then William Carvalho.

Gueye is great off the ball. But he's not good enough on it to be Barry's replacement IMO.

Disagree with this, Gueyes passing so far this season has been excellent and at times more attacking than Barry's, and his composure in the ball is second to none.

I don't see him as a direct replacement to Barry and agree that Gueye needs someone to sit alongside him in a more holding position, but wouldn't discredit Gueyes on the ball abilities.

We need the addition of two central midfielders, a replacement for Barry and a more attacking option. People have spoken about Schneiderlin before, who is likely to be available as he isn't rated at all at United and is way down the pecking order.

Drinkwater would be a good signing, although I can't imagine that Leicester would let him go cheaply.

It's not something I would have said before the Euros, but Joe Allen would have been decent at the price he went for.

Big yes from me.

Schneiderlin would do for me but I would like to see both Besic and Davies get a run at it.
Besic is one of those players we all want to do well, he gives his lot in the cause, dare I say it, a bit like Naismith. Doubts are now starting to creep in both about his ability to stay fit and his quality. I would like to see him dispell those doubts.
Davies looks the part, he could very well develop into the answer to that particular problem.
Schneiderlin would be the insurance we need.

Tom Davies(if only he was a year or 2 older).

Gueye and Barkley could be effective I reckon, Gueye can do all the donkey work for ross, need a #10 though.

Fair enough, you're right in that his movement with the ball and driving runs are impressive. His passing isn't great though, especially yesterday.

I'm not doing him down at all though, his role is much needed and he's great at it.

Franco Baresi played in a similar position to that of Gareth Barry and he was still going strong when 38, so GB who looks after himself superbly has certainly got at least one, maybe potentially two more years in him.

If he played at least one more year, that would give some time for Tom Davies to possibly grow into the role... and maybe GB would be interested in a coaching role as and when he hangs up his playing boots.

If we were in need of making a signing right now to replace GB, I'd prefer a more offensive midfielder and for me the player to target would be Cesc Fabregas.

I still think we should have paid the money for Carvahlo.

No matter who we get it better be soon. Games like Bournemouth and City have shown that against decent passing teams we can only revert to parking the bus as Barry doesn't have the legs when we press high, doing so just leaves a man open in the centre every time.

None of our midfield options apart from Gana deserve to be at the club if I'm honest, it will take us time to recover from what Martinez did to the squad.
