where did it go wrong

It went wrong when he got 72 points in the first season then every divvy thought it was the new average.

A victim of his own first seasons work.

Three seasons and his record is still respectable though, and only the most bitter and twisted wouldn't concede that.
Exactly. We'd kill for two cup semifinals most years!!!

lol

Give it up, Dave.

Quite clearly his inability to organise a defence is the main reason he's on his way. He's taken one of the best drilled in the league and turned it into a circus act.

Lack of flexibility with tactics and reluctance to drop key players out of form. Mainly Barry last season and McCarthy this season. I can understand playing two holding midfielders to make your team solid and hard to beat, ours don't offer that whatsoever so it doesn't make sense to me why he persisted with this tactic.

Style of football did nothing to capture the fans imagination at home. Too often we've had teams pinned back attacking the Gwladys Street and been too slow in building attacks. Put whatever philosophy you've got to one side and win the game. Get the ball wide and get players in the box. It worked for Ferguson at United, it would've worked for us this season too.

Finally, what he's done to the mentality of the team. He came in and fed us some really good lines about working on the players going out there without fear. He's actually achieved the complete opposite. As well as fearing playing against the big teams away from home our players are actually terrified to go out at Goodison now because he needed someone to blame for our atrocious form.

He's won no big games, he refuses to adapt, and that performance against Liverpool the other week is the worst I've ever seen and likely will ever see from an Everton side. Good riddance.

I used to think your posts worth reading, but to think the three season record to be respectable perhaps you aren't supporting the right club.

If thw budget is for a 9th place finish and we include deadwood in that then our budget would likely be for an 11th ot worse place finish.

I was saying 8th or 9th this season.

So its not such a terrible season based on budgets.

Its clear that he needs money to buy good players in a few areas and without the type of player he needs his strategy doesnt work.

Hibbert as a defender put in a better performance than coleman has done as more of an attacking player in the last 2 seasons. Problem has been players not being replaced to fit his style.

The style of play has not really changed though. Looking back over the 1st Martinez season we had many games where we would totally dominate for 45 minutes (Newcastle 3-0 up, and then hang on at the end 3-2 with them almost equalising at the end).
We where still lethal from free kicks and set pieces in the first season. Those have evaporated completely now. We must have accumulated 20+ points thanks to Mirallas, Baines and Barkley dead balls. We have picked up the odd point this season from a corner. That eats away a big chunk of that 72 points haul.

Cannot argue about budgets either as Leicester are champions and Spurs are 2nd thanks to playing youth.
We have underachieved disgracefully this season.
