When should a keeper be dropped?

Bruce Wayne

Player Valuation: £100m
A lot of discussion at the moment about Joe Hart being dropped and whether it's a good thing for his confidence or not.

I suspect it's no coincidence that the arrival of a credible back up in Robles has led to Tim Howard having the best start to a season in sometime.

With fatigue based rotation hardly ever happening with keepers, what's the best way to manage things do you think?

If you have good quality backup why not drop em if they ain't performing. Joe Hart has been overrated for a while, glad he's been found out.

Most keepers go through what hart is going through at certain stages of their careers. People seem shocked when a GK loses form or makes a mistake. It will always happen, it's invietable.

As for are own situation I'm not sure on Robles as Howard's eventual successor. An adequate back up I'm sure he is, but to replace and be our No.1 I'm not sure.

I'd love to sign begovic, Top class GK who is looking to move on from stoke, probably in the summer!

My goodness, I agree with this entire post, that's gotta be a first Chris :hay:

Weirdly spot on.

I read that as T- Howl and imagined him as a werewolf with that giant beard eventually taking over his whole body.

I'd imagine if Howard was dropped after a poor run of form he could deal with it better than a younger keeper. Especially if it was towards the beginning of his career.
I think Ian Turner suffered by only getting the odd chance and making a few mistakes when he did (I'm not suggesting we should have given him more chances - just he was unlucky not to get a run which could have maybe given him a cushion against later confidence knocks).
Confidence matters hugely as a keeper because you have to make instant decisions and commit to it. If you know 99 out of 100 times you get it right, you can deal with that 1 in a 100 you don't.

It's difficult, essentially, because you can't just look at who will win you the next game but whether it will affect your players in the future. An on form Hart is very good and I imagine he can survive a few knocks. If he was 4 years younger, maybe not.
