Everton make new bid for Joao Moutinho as Alan Smith deals edges closer

By Dominic King on Aug 7, 08 01:08 PM in Journalists

EVERTON today upped the ante in their pursuit of Joao Moutinho - as Alan Smith edged ever closer to a move to Goodison Park.
Though the Blues have already had one offer for Sporting Lisbon's captain rebuffed, it is understood they have been in contact with the Portuguese side and made an offer that will smash the club record £11.25m they paid for Ayegbeni Yakubu 12 months ago.
There is still some way to go before a deal can be brokered but talks are ongoing with Sporting's board and Everton are prepared to be patient to land their top summer target Moutinho, who has told Portuguese media that he has his heart set on a move to Merseyside.

They are sentiments which also apply to Newcastle United midfielder Smith and sources in the North East have indicated it is a question of 'when' not 'if' he joins the Blues in a deal that is likely to cost around £2m.
Smith was pulled out of Newcastle's squad for their friendly last night against PSV Eindhoven - Toon boss Kevin Keegan insisted that that was due to an ankle injury - and he is now expected to talk terms with the Blues.
Everton boss David Moyes has long been an admirer of the England international - he attempted to sign him when Smith left Leeds for Manchester United in 2004 and again 12 months ago when he moved from Old Trafford to St James' Park - and his versatility will be a huge plus.
Capped 19 times by his country, Smith may only be 27 but has vast experience of the Premier League and playing in Europe, racking up 358 appearances during his career, which began with a debut goal against Liverpool at Anfield.

Lets just hope its the start of some good transfer activity from the club.

Said it before and i will say it again, if we sign Smith im sending my season ticket back.

Other than that this journo knows nothing and is just guessing, i hate journos and 1 day hope to go on a killing spree, give them something true to write about for once! 1st stop Echo Building.......

Mate over the years the times I have gone home from a match and told the wife from now om I'm available for shopping on match days is too many to count but guess what it never happened and I think you will be the same .we all support the club not the players they come and go.(y)

I think Smith is a done deal.

Didnt play against PSV? AJ did the same with us against Preston. He aint injured either.

Get that Moutinho [Poor language removed] in a blue shirt!!!!

I bet you don't.

OF COURSE I WILL, HIS SIGNING WILL MAKE ME HATE THE CLUB I HAVE SUPPORTED ALL MY LIFE AND I WILL TURN MY BACK ON THEM FOREVER, I WILL ALSO GLADLY WAVE GOODBYE TO £450!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Caps for added passion and in the hope that my passionate talk makes u believe me.

But yea ur right, im weak. :(

How would smith hurt us? If we get him for the right price he may turn out to be a diamond in the rough. If not, then he will add depth to the team, something that we lack at the moment.

Over-reaction.

I'd only send my season ticket back if the board weren't backing Moyes or if Moyes walked.

I think Alan Smith would do better at Everton. He's physical, and I think would be a good improvement in terms of physicality which we need, from set pieces etc. For £2 million. Considering his experience, and considering we sold Marcus Bent for that. Bargin in my eyes.

Smith is a player who's lost his way, and could get back to form at Everton.

I just dont like him, there are some footballers that i just dont like and will never be able to judge them fairly. So my hate for him means i can never see his good points, not that i think he has any.

Don't throw it away, I'll have it.

Alan Smith is a good player, he is also a thug. So was Duncan Ferguson, who apparently was a legend. So getting Alan Smith at a point in his career where he will be relishing a new start with a very good coach, with some quality players around him. And at half the price that we bid recently, I would definitely take him.

He's hardly Ashley Cole or of that sort is he? (y) (or Joey Barton?!)

I'd be up in arms if that scumbag (Cole) ended up at Everton

does anyone think that smith would be poison in the clubhouse?

Cahill would knock him out if he was, but I very much doubt it since all the lads are known to be friendly and Smith is 27 now not 17.

Plus Nev would no doubt be reporting back to Moyes like a little school boy...

Got no worries. (y)
