I don't know how it is in the UK, but stateside if the victim chooses not to press charges for assault, the offending person often gets away with minimal retribution.

Duncan was prosecuted because a fan in the stand made a complaint about an assault he'd witnessed on the pitch, as of yet that hasn't happened with Pardew. He'd also been convicted twice before for violent offences and that was part of the reason for a custodial sentence.

I might press charges because I witnessed it on TV and i'll be quite honest it really shook me up. I'm also going to claim compensation as it's really messed me up.
