What Makes a Good Pub ?

All the best pubs I've known have had the same things, good beer, good tunes, good craic, good bar, good personality bar staff, zero arsehole policy, no kids. You would think it was easy!
All the best wherever you sup.

Loads of places like this now, I’m not sure why people who own dogs want to take them everywhere with them. There’s a dog friendly pub in Crosby, we went in there the other week and it stunk of dog so we got off.

The owners are limiting their business to people who love dogs, anyone who doesn’t have one will notice the smell and want to leave.
Even as a lifelong dog lover I would avoid dog-friendly pubs .

They're not so bad these days but when the smoking ban came in and you could smell the toilets, the carpet and people's BO it was horrific.
You definetely saw the difference after the smoking ban .When the ban first came in you really noticed the smell in pubs, stale ale and piss hung in the air.
To be honest most of the pubs i frequent in town still stink of piss if you are upwind of the toilets.i am not a fan of Weatherspoons but toilets wise they are far more hygenic but you dont get the sights you use to see in your old local
I remember an old fella complaining about a tooth ache so his mate got him a double whisky then went to his van brought in a pair of pliers and removed his tooth at the bar.
You cant buy that lind of service

Are pubs in France more akin to Taverns?
Good question. We lived in Charente Maritime near the coast between La Rochelle and Bordeaux. In all honesty I can't recall anything remotely resembling a pub as we would know it. They have bars , often within betting offices ( (PMU) or a hotel or a cafe tabac.

I'm sure that in the big cities you will find Irish type pubs.

1. Good selection of ales and guest beers.
2. Open fire in winter
3. Rustic charm and ambience
4. Well behaved dogs asleep on the stone floor after a walk
5. Good company
6. Good home cooked, locally produced grub

You've just described my local , alas without the good home cooked grub. In our case it's overpriced, tiny portions of faux gourmet food. It's really sad because it's a 5 minute walk and I'd love to eat there and everything else about the pub is great.

I don't take my dogs into the pub , mostly because they wouldn't like it and I'm not sure that they would react well to crowds of people.

However I love seeing a well behaved dog in the pub but then we live in the countryside and it's pretty much a way of life.
