What Makes a Good Pub ?

Don’t mind food in a pub, as a lot of country pubs wouldn’t exist without doing food.

There should be separate areas for drinking and eating though.
It's when it stops being a pub and becomes a restaurant with a bar. The Kingsman is a prime example: never a great pub, but an easy stop off.

Now, last orders is about half nine because they aren't bothered unless you're buying a carvery.

The closest pub to me, a greene king one, is like that. You feel out of place having a drink there, we've lived here for over 7 years and I think we've been there 5 times max..it's always rammed tho with people of retirement age

This is why I say different pubs for different seasons..

You can blank out the restaurant in a lovely garden in Summer.

Winter - you cant blank it out, and can get the feeling you're just taking up space.

Margins are so fine now that food is often the only way pubs can survive

Pro’s and Cons. If it’s a restaurant with a bar, tables need to be set and the smell of food can put people off. It’s even worse now because food is expensive, NIC’s and minimum wages have gone up and servers (who were always younger people) are being let go. Most pubs by us always served food to the detriment of the beer and atmosphere, it used to work to a degree but it didn’t bring in regulars and they are now suffering, whereas beer led pubs are doing well and have a better atmosphere. But it’s horses for courses depending on location etc. being a country pub means we get various organised shoots in and people who have walked across muddy fields, and there are always half a dozen well behaved dogs accompanying them, it really adds to the atmosphere……
