What is the point of Everton?

I'm struggling to see how one 3 minute spell against Wigan defines us as a team.

This.

The piece is written by some Sky generation tool, who thinks he has the right to pass comment on a club he patently knows nothing about, as no-one who understands either football in general or EFC, could ask the question that he poses. It's an insult to the club & us as Blues, if he doesn't 'get' EFC, then I couldn't give a toss, as his opinion isn't worth listening to. We're Everton FFS!

i stopped half way though because it was embarassing to read, you would think it was a kopite, but if it was they would have mentioned them in the title race and definitely as an obstacle for us to overcome if we wanted champions league. Says all these if's for us to qualify for champions league but the only if was ourselves in the transfer market.

Basically this article is saying everyone bar the top 5 in english football is pointless, why don't we all just go home now? ha

with regards to the wigan comment that davek highlighted, that applies more to david moyes' everton (not a dig) rather than everton itself, talking out of his ass as if we've never won anything in our history and never won a meanful game like against wimbledon.

ah well, if this person is over the age of 7 i feel sorry that this is what their life consists of

But he is right. We make up numbers in the league. Why do we 'compete' in the league? To win stuff. Qualify for Europe. The Premier league is dominated by 5 clubs. With little to no room for surprise packages like in the 60, 70's and 80's.

Why do we bother?

I recognize I will get flack for my standpoint. But football isn't a level playing field (it never really was), but it is really hard to genuinely compete in this day and age. Much more so than in previous generations.

My glass - it is half empty. Why do we bother?

I don't know about you lot but I'd find a relegation battle much more exhilirating than this boring same old of 2 points off 5th and 6 off 4th with a game in hand.

People were saying the Top 4 will never change less than 5 years ago, but it has.

Everton finished 4th in 2005, which was a while ago now, but the same defeatist viewpoints were prevalent back then too.

It's a funny old game!

Look my picture of Hibbo in the eye and tell him he'll be fighting for the championship next season....

It is a broader question I suppose. Is the Premier League a genuine competition where any of the clubs could potentially have a crack at the title with the way it is set up at the moment?

Mostly because of vast investments from outside of the clubs...

Nice if it happens, but we have no coherent strategy that I can see for this. So until it happens. How do we compete?

I think the problem with the piece is that it hurts because the author aimed it at our club. However, set that aside and think about the state of the league and I can see how it applies. Not just to us, but to many other clubs.

Why bother?
