What is the point of Everton?

Barnstorming piece for those not of the Moyesiah persuasion says it exactly as it is.

Ask fans of other clubs what's noteworthy about this Everton and they'll say "Moyes is a good manager" they'll mutter about not being relegated and no money just like some evertonians then glaze over saying do you like iphones or are they for tits?

A losing cup final and semi final or 7th place trophy aren't even mentioned, why should they? - Who remembers losers?.

The only thing newsworthy about Everton and the Moyes 11 years is Moyes and that's the truth and sometimes the truth hurts.

I know the article is a load of bollocks, but you know sometimes I feel like this about not just Everton but a fair few clubs in the PL. What is the point? We win some games, lose a few, finish high-mid table, rinse and repeat. Unless you have billions at your disposal, becoming a big name and challenging for silverware on a regular basis is impossible now.

Modern football is rubbish?

It's the thrill of being in the super-dooper, global branded Premier League.

It used to be called treading water...now redefined as success. The traditional rule of thumb still applies though: no trophy - no cigar.

I guess week by week we're usually entertained, especially the last 12 months, we've on the whole played some attractive footy up till February anyway. And that's the crux of it I guess, it's an entertainment industry now.

I know that we are a club with great history and triadition. But I would much rather be Everton than 98% of English footballs other profressional clubs. Maybe thats a better way of looking at it and you wont be so bitter. I still enjoy watching us play so i get enough entertainment out of Everton to prove that Everton is not pointless.

He is just having a go or are you just not liking what you are reading ? He nails it for me and I make no bones about it, the truth is there its just a case of you wanting to see it and stomach it

But what's the point?

There's always going to be teams like Everton in the top division. If it was his own club and he was unhappy, i'd understand. He's having a go at our very existence just because we aren't challenging further up the table. I just don't see the point.

Now, if Everton fans were going to every city and tearing it to shreds, or if the players were crocking every team they faced, then I'd understand why he'd have a go because we'd be hindering and impairing other clubs. We're not though. We're just trying to get on with it.

His article is a waste of energy

"Get yourselves into a crisis (even a media-made one); have a dressing room revolt where stories are leaked and boots are kicked or teammates’ wives get shagged; get caught in a classic relegation dogfight. In fact, why not even get relegated for a year, have a laugh scoring a million goals in the Championship and then come straight back up, just because you can."

This sounds ****ing great. The rest of that was bitter drivel.

I can see Hibbo shagging all the wives

If you take out the anti-EFC nonsense, the article makes a reasonable point - that the league is more or less a closed shop to a handful of teams with ££££££££. New entrants such as City are there because of cash, end of. Yes, a Bradford or Birmingham can play out of their skins for a handful of games and nick a cup (wish we could) or get to a final they have no right to be in based on club size, players etc (the romance of cup competitions), but over 38 games there are no surprises, just the same old same old. The days of clubs coming out of nowhere and winning the league like Villa or Forest (from memory in their first year after promotion from the second tier!) are as much ancient history as the Roman Empire.

It seems less true in certain other leagues, but Spain and Italy conform to the same pattern more or less, and again it is based around cash. In fact life conforms to the same pattern - there are dominant businesses and the also rans in every market. Doesn't mean everyone should just pack up and go home though. If you are not on the board of directors at your work, do you decide just to jack it all in and stay in bed for the rest of your life? Apple almost folded at one point and look at them now. You keep on trying until they put you 6 feet under.

To write a general article on this premise of inequalities and dominance is fine. To make it a piece singling out Everton is just Suarez snide behaviour.

The tone of the article is abysmal, written by a complete amateur with a hefty degree of bias.

However, the overall message is sound. It's hard to argue with pretty much any of that.
