What is an Everton Legend ?

......it all depends on the era you grew up in. My son was born to be blue and big Dunc is his hero. I loved the big fella and his undoubted love affair with the club but he's not a legend in my eyes. So who's the greatest of them all, little curly Alan Ball. Same affection for the club as Ferguson but absolutely top draw on the world stage. Nobody could get near the little fella, tikki takki before it was even invented.
I wasn't the biggest fan of Alex Young and many a myth has evolved over the years but although he was a class act he wasn't the same level as Bally. The team of '85 contained many great players, but Colin Harvey's view that the 1970 side would thump them says a lot. I feel privilaged to have seen so much rhapsody in blue and hope the good times return.

What a post that is !

this same thread is rehased whenever the topic of Big Dunc comes up, end of the day a legend is either

a. a world class talent

b. a cult figure at the club

Big Dunc was certainly B.

To my mind an Everton legend has to be part of a generation of championship winning sides. We are not some mickey mouse operation who give the accolade of legend to players who have simply been 'wholehearted'. Frankly Mick Lyons was one of the biggest blues you could wish to meet yet he would not meet the criteria required. In my view there are only about 15 players who would meet the criteria required to be considered a legend

Therefore I would reserve the legend accolade only to players from the 60s and 80s. No Latchford, no King, no Lyons, no Dunc, no Tommy, no Arteta, no Cahill.

In no particular order - Dean, Labone, Kendall, Harvey, Ball, Sheedy, Sharp, Reid, Mountfield, Ratcliffe, Alex Young, Southall, West, Steven, Watson - are the only ones who would make the cut for me.

The reason being the players above helped shape Everton's stature as one of the premier clubs in the country.

John Bailey, Andy Gray.......Tony Hibbert.................from what i recall all cult figures.....none are legends in my eyes.

I think the problem with cult figures is that they differ from person to person whereas a genuine world class talent at the club is recognised by 99% of the fanbase. for me Hibbert has never been a cult figure more than mr testicles, and some people even say Strac was a cult figure from just a loan spell which makes me laugh.

it's all subjective mate

Heroes became legends, legends became myth... And for two and a half thousand years, the Cup passed out of all knowledge. Until, when chance came, the Cup ensnared a new bearer. The Cup came to the creature Moyes, who took it deep into the tunnels under Goodison Park, and there it consumed him....

A legend for me is someone who gives 100% in the Royal blue jersey against the unfancied teams not just the big guns and to score against the enemy also helps. To see players cry when we lose is another factor, todays players don't really show that i'm afaraid

This ^^^ Playing for the shirt....not the money or praise....playing for the team,, not yourself.

Just to throw my opinion in, I think a legend would not only be players who win trophies but also players who inspire people watching the game for the first time to come back, people who kid's pretend to be in the playground and idolise to play like.
For me, I've never seen us win a thing so yeah, Cahill, Arteta and Ferguson rank as legends for me.

It's all about views an opinions and they will always be split when it comes to arguments such as this.
End of the day, we all love Big Dunc and all the other names that have been mentioned here. Whether they are ''legends'' or ''cult hero's'' we will always love an remember them.

F*cking love Everton
