Reidy's Bottle Of Grecian

The Unobstructed View
so going into the window did we consider ourselves to be skint or did we think there were multi-millions to spend ?
i saw any major signings of the type that have been talked about to be debt for the club, which if we didnt get into the top 4 would be disastrous, theres no point getting in the c.l. quals and the same happening as last time, it would take a very good run in the comp. to be worth the outlay, probably needing to do what Rangers did last year, from which they made £29 million.
so the money needed to be spent against what is up for grabs is too much of a risk, whereas the money needed to achieve what we did last year is nowhere near the same, and with a bit of luck and learning from mistakes then the gap could be closed and maybe with the rub of the green then 4th or even 3rd could be achieved if disaster strikes at a couple of the top 4, luck can turn against anyone (rs excluded there based on historical evidence).
however, if a top 4 place could be nicked with a hard working team who dont have to be sold 'cos they cant be afforded and a run in c.l. takes place then it's quids in,no-one at the club will want the ship to sink by taking too big a gamble, we weren't too far off last year and moyes probably doesnt think we need to spend 20mill per player to get the same again. if saha works out, the only 1 i see is carsley to be replaced, i would get mcfadden back tbh as well. so with everyone fit then it's back up we need which doesnt cost 20 mill.
so what exactly was you expecting ?

I didn't expect the AJ and McFadden money to vanish into a blackhole.

the window shuts tonight and we have yet to spend a single penny whilst making the best part of 15 million on player sales. Something does not add up somewhere.

I expected to spend some money, we've yet to do that. I expected us to sign a higher calibre of player than we already have, not a Champions League player someone reasonable who's in our price range. I also expected to replace key players that we had lost.

so if we get a couple in of the calibre that we have lost will you be happy ?
are you not the ones who've been screaming for 20 mill players?
we'd all love those types but face facts, we have been used by all and sundry to get new deals, agents after fee's for ones that arent for sale, our expectations snowballed as soon as arshavin was a doubt and we then expected the club to jump up to an amount thats above where we went out of the running for him.

A valiant attempt to add perspective, but the fact is, as said above, we not only failed to make the (not neceassarily expensive) incremental improvements to the squad (for me, one CM of stature, one pacy wide man, one very good back up for Howard), we've actually shed valued players from last season's squad.

As for, 'would you be happy if' scenarios: well, if me aunty had a pair of bollocks she'd.....

...it's not happened thus far has it? <looks at watch>

i think thats more an 'IF' than a would you be happy, or what did you really expect.

What I'd have been happy with cant nowhappen: a swift flurry of transfer activity early in the transfer window picking up our targets, bedding them in for pre-season, looking to get off to a flier in the Premiership. The reality, though, is that we've left it until the last few days of the window, and are now using the cash brought in from the Johnson and McFadden sales and the shedding of wages from others leaving in order to bring in players who are, for the most part, unknown quantities and bed them into a struggling team.

20 million pound players, no that wasn't me.

I want us to buy a higher quality of player which is reasonable. That is the way you progress and push on. Those can range from any price, 8-20 million.

It probably wouldn't be as bad if the club didn't make all these noises about quality and backing Moyes.

Quit!!

I'm hearing from some boards that DM may quit today if no more money is available.... I hope this isn't true...!! :(

When you receive over 30 million pound plus for finishing 5th, plus other prize money, I expect us to spend atleast some of it.

plus, if we finish 12th instead of 5th or whatever, we will miss out on millions of pounds worth of prize money etc

There simply is nothing good about letting 2 first team players go, and spending absolutely nothing to replace them.

Net spend so far this summer.... minus 10.5 million pound.

Bolton have spent far more than us, I did not expect to be outspent by Bolton and West Brom.
