What do you think it will be like for you.......Retirement

Looks like I won't have kids so I'm trying to save a wee bit when I can as I don't have a pension and hope its enough or that I drop dead before I get laid off when I'm of eldely age.
Do the pension thing, even at your advanced age every year makes a difference.

(Psst. Voluntary Class 2 contributions as well.)

For me, retirement age seems to be receding along with all the goodies that were at 60 - still at least I'm not female and have an extra 7 years on my working life to pay for the bankers. Can't really see myself retiring until ill-health makes me - self-employment works for me as a lifestyle.

tbh not that bad, If I do stuff...I do and not ruled by the clock, if I don't feel like doing anything I don't (default position) do a bit of baby sitting.

the biggest struggle is being in each others pocket 24/7

but what you have to do is find something to do, if it isn't important, MAKE it important.

currently writing shortish stories for the discerning gentleman - or lady reader...40k hits so far...harder than you would think (no pun intended)

Had to retire early to care for my youngest who was born disabled, so it came out of the blue.

First six months was like being on holiday then the reality kicks in.

The lack of stimulation is a killer. You go have from having loads to do, to very little to do.( other than look after my lad ).

Plus spending much more time with your missus can be very difficult too.

Imo the key to a happy retirement is preparing for it. Make sure you will have things to do whatever they are. Empty days even with money are bad for the soul and only leads to bad things, both mentally and physically .

Here endeth the lesson !

About like this, really.

I've gone from cube life and running a piece of the unruly IT beast that processes mortgages over here to spending my time in musical pursuits of various kinds. I'm gigging more than I have in 30 years, buying/rebuilding/selling old instruments, organizing various local woodwind groups and going out at this time of year to work and clinic with school bands before contest season in March, something I did in my youth.

The missus is still wrangling her spreadsheets and I do most of the domestic stuff. It's a good life. Stay busy and and you'll stay alive longer.

Four years to go and work is pretty stressful and has been for a number of years
So with a cardiac history I hope I make it to retirement and then

Write my book
Read loads of books
Bird watch every day
Learn how to cook properly so Mrs Prof will enjoy some culinary creations
Drink heavily
oh and occasionally winter abroad

I retired over 4 years ago with pretty much same same ambitions as listed above.
Never got round to writing a book.
Don't read as much as I thought I would.
Do a bit of bird watching.
Never learned to cook (although I don't know Mrs Prof anyway)
Still working at No 5 :pint2:
Staycations for me.

....almost there. Folk ask me what I'll do but it's what I won't do that matters and I certainly won't have to work any more. Countdown.

As above. It's not what you do, it's what you don't have to do that makes the difference

On the whole I love it. Obviously wish I had more money like, but you adapt to your circumstances.
Much rather not work and have what I've got than work and be better off financially.
