First saw them at Larks in the Park - Sefton Park in 1983. Part of an Old Grey Whistle Test special for BBC2.

No one knew anything about them, as they’d just formed from the ashes of the Skids.

They just blew the place away.

There’s no way, that a free gig like this would happen now. a thousand plus, pissed and stoned people, all stood on a slope, leading down to a lake !

Their first gig in Liverpool was in the old hofbrauhaus on Mount Pleasant earlier that year. Bono was standing on the same table as me and The Edge was down in the crowd (I asked Bono where he was) . They’d been on Radio Merseyside earlier that night plugging their upcoming tour.

For a while, they were actually a bigger band than U2.

The Boy album changed everything for U2.
