What are you currently listening to?

Never really listened to the Beatles before, but watching the Get Back doco I decided to go into their back catalogue and wow. I had no real idea.

I really do think they created such an incredible array of melodies, incredibly clever lyrics, and engineered soundscapes that literally defined genres in such a short period of time. What blows my brain is the fact they created so many of these records and never played them ever again.

Heres my top 10, some I'd heard before, but not properly, most I haven't.

10. Two of Us
From the doco, simple, innocent, but just speaks to me.
"You and I have memories, longer than the road that stretches out ahead"

9. The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill
Don't know why I like this so much. It feels like this could be a dance track, unlike how Helter Skelter is really the first metal track, this track is literally analogue techno.

8. Dear Prudence
the 2nd of my picks relating to their time in India, particularly Lennon, but this song is a masterpiece. Those drums. Ringo might have quit and they did themselves around this time but who knows.

7. You've got to hide your love Away

Despite 'Yesterday', this is a my favourite song on Help. Disguising the actual subject matter in plain sight of the time is genius.

6. I'll follow the Sun

McCartney wrote this at 16 years old. o_O

5. Magical Mystery Tour

Their least favourite amongst critics? I'd argue that a) its a better into than Sgt Peppers intro, and b) the tracks on this album alone would be any other bands greatest hits, its that good.

1. Tomorrow Never Knows

Looking at this from 2022 it's easy for the timeline of their music to get lost, to appear like they are a sixties band and this is a sixties sound. This is as revolutionary future sound as you'd get in any era. To hear this in 1966 would have been like listening to music from Mars.
