I doubt the Merseyside contingent of the International Brigade would have been that popular in Liverpool at the time: sectarian politics would have made them pariahs among most Catholics, as the Spanish Republicans were in a war against the Spanish church; and a lot of politically active Protestants in Liverpool had been on a journey that took them toward fascism - the Protestant-only local Workingmen's Conservative Association (Liverpool FCs point of origin) had adopted the fascist salute and some involved in it would eventually move to the British Union of Fascists, and the Liverpool Tory leadership invited Oswald Mosley to speak twice in Liverpool in the early-to-mid-1930s.
As Ramsay McDonald had said earlier: "Liverpool is rotten and we had better recognise it".
