Sorry, I thought I’d replied to this. Both versions are very, very good in their own right and I enjoy both, but I think (like yourself) Ferry’s just edges it.
Lennon’s version is more pure in the sense that he really means the lyrics, however Ferry’s tribute to him just add something different. The instrumentals as well!
To me Ferry’s is just much more atmospheric, with real layers of sound - which is what he was doing with all his music at that time.
Haven't been as excited for a tour in so long, these supporting The Menzingers. Ridiculous.
