Stambolovo - Bulgarian wedding music. Ivo is the undisputed King of the genre - he is a Roma from Thrace in Bulgaria. This is from an album that got some play back in the early 90's, when I got hip to Ivo. This is kind of (looks for a word) "westernized" and cleaned up in terms of tone and emotional distance compared to some of the rawer and more emotional live performances. These guys go for hours, people just walk up and stuff money in their clothes all while the music is going on and on and on. Quite a scene.

One of my favorite quotes is from a sax player that worked with Ivo - he was asked what it was like playing with his hero, and his answer was "it's a lot like being a rabbit chased by wild dogs..." I can understand that.

I was going to say foot tappingly good, but I ended up just waving my finger in time to the music.lol
Excellent, and so evocative of the Balkans.
