We've been poor far too often

Mark Lawrenson: Everton unbeaten in seven - so why the despondency? Oct 20 2009

By Mark Lawrenson, Liverpool Daily Post
YOU can understand an air of despondency at Goodison Park on Saturday.
Everton have got to the stage where they expect to be beating the likes of Stoke and Wolves at home and dropping four points in two games is naturally going to lead to frustration.
But look at it another way – it’s seven games unbeaten.
There’s nothing worse than being a ‘win one, lose the next one’ type of team because you don’t get any consistency or momentum into your season.
When it gets to that stage you start to wonder if you can even put a run of a couple of draws and wins together just to get you out of that rut.

So it’s important to keep the points tally ticking over, especially when you’re not at your best.

It’s clear that Everton are still deficient in one or two areas and are perhaps short of quality – as shown by struggles to break down Stoke and Wolves.

And the Premier League position at the moment is far from ideal, perhaps a symptom of having the Europa League to contend with as well.

But then with a trip to Benfica coming up, how can you complain? That’s the sort of fixture you want to be in Europe for and a midweek trip to Portugal can never be sniffed at.

And if the unbeaten run can be maintained over there, happy days are here again!

Or is he just gutted the RS are [Poor language removed] and wants to find comfort in us being gash too?

Once we have Arteta pinging the ball about in the middle the midfield deficiencies will largely disappear. The question is whether it'll be papering over the cracks or we'll be good enough to resume our competition for the top 6 or 7 once the squad is healthy. If Spurs lost Palacios and Modric at the same time, or Villa lost Petrov and Ashley Young, they wouldn't look anything like as strong as they do. Key personnel make one hell of a difference, as Kenana said, we need Neville and Arteta back.

I dunno. Arteta's not going to be back or fully fit till December-ish, same with Neville. And I do think we've had a fairly easy looking fixture list and looked poor. The main players wont be back till after we've played some really tough games now (Villa, Spurs, United, Chelsea, the RS) and we dont look anywhere near good enough. Points are dropping all over the place.

Villa and Spurs have moderate cover. Palacios goes, Huddleston comes in. Krankjar for Modric. Reo Coker for Petrov. Downing/Milner for Young. They have something more solid IMO.

The central midfield and right side for us is very poor IMO. Could change with other players given a chance in different positions but I dont think that will happen.

seriously the injury list is just beyond a joke. It really is! Now Billy is the next one to pick up a knock, and as it's his calf it could be quite lengthy. That's more or less 12 regular players we are without. Do you think it's something to do with our pitch or what? This amount of injuries can't surely just be bad luck?

This has been mentioned on other threads the frequency of injuries, happen they need the sickness benefit because their wages are so low at Everton.

As for injuries I would blame the relatively new turf at Finch Farm, new grass that has not bedded in can be ligament wrenching. To blame professional physios is just plain stupid, they will have forgotten more than anyone on here knows about training and training methods. The injuries that happened to Teta, Yak, Pieman, Jags and Nev all came about in matches..............it called [Poor language removed] and it happens! If ligaments have been stretched in practice they can go more easily

When it comes to being poor for to long, yes there are reasons but compared to many we have only lost four games so far this season with a drastically reduced squad. Over the park two go down and they commit hari kari oh yes they've been beaten six times this year. Our footie may not be pretty but ffs why go over the top its pathetic

its not over top when more than half of the game we played were poor.
We only manage to scrap points because our opponent did not have enough quality to kill us off.
If we carry the same form into our next 10 matches we can expect less points than our previous 10. Now thats worrying.

Come back in ten games time and lets see

I actually agree with Axlswhk a little here.
Our run in to Christmas is very hard, and January to March is enough to bring tears to the eyes.
We either start playing, or risk a relegation fight, and that isn't a knee jerk. Read the fixture list and tell me it's a knee jerk. :)

Not knee-jerk at all. We've had an incredibly easy start to the campaign, and look at where we are in the league. When the tough games come, we'd better be ready. If not, we're in the bottom half, and scrapping with the likes of Hull.
