Mentality of the 80s side sounds like it was at a different level [60s team before my time]. The 80s side declined naturally, European issues aside, but the 69/70 side looks like it went from sublime to mediocre overnight. That 85 team was probably the best in Europe that season. Had we been able to compete in Europe the following few seasons we may have won the big one too. The 60s teams weren't on that level
Combined team.
Southall
Newton Labone Ratcliffe Wilson
Harvey Kendall
Steven Ball Sheedy
Sharp
69 team edge it 6-5. Joking apart only picked this formation to try and get as many of the best players from the two eras into the side at once.
The 80s cos the music was better
Runs. ........

I know sustained periods of dominance weren't common back then, but something strange seems to have happened 70/71 if the previous season's team were as special as everyone says.
The football was good at Goodison in the early 60's,but, from 66 to 70 it was unbelievable. I saw the 63 title side and I saw the 80's side, they were both very very good sides, but, the side in the late 60's was in my opinion, the finest English club side I have ever had the privelidge to see.
What were some of the lesser known players like in the 1963 team as well as the 69/70 team then? We often hear about Labone, Wilson, Young, Royle and the Holy Trinity, but were the other players that made up the 63 and 69 squads great players too or more efficient allowing the others to excel?
Newton was one of the very few equally at home at RB or LB... most of his caps, iirc, were at RBI may be wrong but wasn't Keith Newton a left back? Even if he wasn't I'd still have both Tommy Wright (first choice) or Gary Stevens in at right back ahead of Keith Newton>
Well obviously there were improvements in fitness, diet, etc over 25yrs. But I did see them all and, IMHO, for a given value of ace the 2 were neck and neck.I didn't see the 60s side and appreciate those who did hold them in the highest esteem. I've watched the 60s team quite a bit on video and I can appreciate what the older guys are saying. For someone who witnessed the mid 80's side week in week out, I'd be surprised if the 60s team would even live with them to be honest. The 80's side had everything. Power, pace, skill, telepathy.
As I said, I've tried to force players into the side (even out of position). Fair point about Newton, although I've still not forgiven Stevens for his mistake in the 86 cup final.I may be wrong but wasn't Keith Newton a left back? Even if he wasn't I'd still have both Tommy Wright (first choice) or Gary Stevens in at right back ahead of Keith Newton>

you really missed out mate we played tougher opposition imo and the football of the holy trinity,Young , and vernon in the early 1963 season was blis!I didn't see the 60s side and appreciate those who did hold them in the highest esteem. Not too put too fine a point on it but that team/squad of the late 60's were the Club version of the 1970 Brazil team...and would've given them a decent run for their money too.
I genuinely believe only Southall would definitely have got into the 69 side, possibly Ratcliffe and Lineker too? But Ray Wilson, Ball, Harvey, Kendall and Morrisey would have walked into that 80's team and made it invincible! Dont get me wrong the 80's side was fabulous, but it only boasted one pkayer who was the best in his position in all Everton history (big Nev)' whereas Ball, Harvey, Kendall and Wilson were all the best in their position that this club will ever see. That nails it for me.
