Wayne Rooney - England Captain

Player Valuation: £70m
Is he really the best player to take England forward (if you accept the conceit that a captain is the fulcrum of a team). I've seen him play a handful and I means handful of good games for England.

Is this not just a continuation of the likes of Gerrard and Beckham being given the captaincy?

Selection by committee by the look of it.

We've had Robbie Keane for ages but he is at least our most important goalscorer.

Rooney seems very uninspiring to me and makes me think he wasn't Roy's choice as why wait until now to announce unless he is under orders.

He's still England's best player.

Not sure if he's captain material, myself. But I'm struggling to think of anyone else you could give the armband to.

Just looking through the squad just picked for England.

Wow. What happened to all the English talent? They will be fortunate to qualify for major tournaments, no matter get to the latter stages.

Lampard and Stevie Me are retired now, so this is the perfect chance. Play a new team, keep it, be decent in 5-10 years.
If the FA all resigned tomorrow and some people who watch football came in, this would be the obvious thing to do because Germany did it and look at them.

No more of this "he's had 5 great performances for West Brom so he has to get in the England team" bull. That's how people like David Nugent end up with caps [although he's an Evertonian, and he did score, but can't think of anyone else right now].

Rooney as captain is probably because he's the most likely to be in the next world cup squad. I can't think of any other reason.

I don't watch England anymore, and I enjoyed the world cup far more once England were out of it cos the press stopped whining on.

koff England indeed.

Ah, but lads .. it's all about passion.

But Cahill for me too if I had to pick.

But don't give a toss about England & only what if there's an Everton player on the field

Should have been Joe Hart for me. Rooney has been picked on reputation in my opinion. Saying that we don't have any natural leaders at the moment. Hart is the most vocal.

At the moment I couldn't care less about England

When the FA decide to actually appoint a decent manager, adopt a meaningful long term strategy and kick out all of the RS then maybe I might care again

Oh and make Ross captain instead of that granny botherer

Koff England

Agree.

Why people get excited about a game being on TV is beyond me.

Not interested at all.

Might help Wayne to pull his finger for the international team, you never know.

It gave Beckham a second chance at international level and he took it.

Understand the sentiment, but you can't suddenly deny in-form players the reward of an England cap. Sure, you need a solid basis of regulars, but if someone has a storming 3 months, then its usually a bit of a reward to be able to play for England. Needs to be a targeted selection, mind, not just shoehorning them in.

I really don't think a captain makes that much difference.

Whether it's Rooney, Hart or Danny fecking Rose, it doesn't change the fact that England are super mega gash.
