Was Andy Townsend really that bad a commentator ?

I like Brian Kerr, proper aul Dub. His commentary is a bit like some bloke down the pub but at least he has some insight.

The two morons on ITV are horrendous much prefer BBC.

John Champion is hilariously bad, can't take him seriously after all those years of PES!

Genuinely I would love the ability to switch off the commentators, but keep the natural sound of the crowd. This would be magic for football and tennis I think too - snooker and F1 I think it needs commentators (the snooker voices are quiet and relaxing and helps you sleep), and cricket they know to shut up and have ample pauses between comments

Football these days is often just a constant stream of noise from the berks on the microphone - I can see no financial reason or difficulty in BBC Red Button offering this service. It would give more of a match-day feel to the free streams of Everton!

Excellent point
I saw a few matches on the TV (match of the day and the big match!) before I went to a live match
First match was my home town Dundalk v a Dublin team Drumcondra
Dundalk scored and I was waiting for the replay, Im still waiting lol

I'll never understand why TV feels we need people to tell us what we've just seen. Anyone who wouldn't understand what's happening won't be watching so save yourselves some money and just have a commentator.

after moving back to Germany 10 years ago, after 17 years or so in England, the minimalist solo commentary on German TV first took some getting used to, but after a while I appreciated it. You get to watch footie and not get distracted by stupid inane comments from some no-mark who probably used to wear a red shirt.

anyone ever watch a game with spanish or arabic commentary? might only be one fella but by god he never shuts up! Short draw of breath is the only respite you get, and the audio mixing is far too loud in their favour (something English TV actually does really well, so you get to hear the crowd properly). Horrible way to watch footie.

I too would love to be able to watch a match on tv with just the crowd sounds. As other people have said, you can see what's happening. You don't need some loud mouth telling you what you just saw. And why do they have to give their opinion about the match/players/ground/referee/whatever? Who is interested?

Went to our match at Fulham away a couple of years ago with a couple of mates, ones a bird. When the match kicked off she pipes up 'why can't I hear the commentators?'

I wept.
