Was Andy Townsend really that bad a commentator ?

to be fair at least he wasn't part of the kopite cult infestation of the mass media...for that he gets a pass from me.

Rubbish, he was cliched but hard not to be. Personally I liked Big Ron in the 90s and Townsend was not bad too as a co-commentator also

Brian Moore or Barry Davies were the best main commentators, and for all the stick I don't mind Clive on itv

Jonathan Pearce is an over-excitable buffoon, Motson "ohh, and it's..."needs putting out to pasture, and there are a couple of utter berks on MOTD, that Steve Wilson for one

As for co-commentators, Owen is dull, P Neville is terrible, G Nev is nowhere near as good as he is in the studio, and Beglin annoys me

Townsend isn't very cool therefore people wanna slate him. He was fine

He wasn't good but he was far from the worst.

In fact, I would say he is nearer the top of the color commentator league table than the bottom.

Compared to Michael Owen he is a diamond.

Why are we talking about him in the past tense BTW.

Has he been fired?

Or worse :(

Why do they have to be ex-footballers though? Just because they played it doesn't mean they're any more knowledgable.

Tim Vickery would be a good co-commentator, as would Jonathan Wilson, I've heard him talk for a good hour and not become boring.

also from the guardian podcast Barry Glendenning, who talks utter shyte but is funny with it. Michael Cox from the tactics-end is very good.

But I reckon the TV firms go for ex-pros to pull viewers in...not understanding that we don't care who's punditing as we're on their channel to watch the game, ffs.

You lads rarely have to hear Brian Kerr take to the commentary box. If you did, there wouldn't be a question in anyone's mind.

Cox is excellent but doesn't seem interested whereas Glendenning, Wilson and even AC Jimbo would be good. People want comments about the game that enhance the game, not constant overlay of meaningless soundbites and [Poor language removed] "clyde"/"in and around the 18 yard box" every ten minutes

Love AC Jimbo...such clever wit. he should be the main man on MOTD.

He may not have played for them but he sucked up at every opportunity.

The last England games, he wasted no opportunity to lambaste Sterling. He played into LFC's victim status like a cult member.

He's a damned lying coward and I'm glad to see the back of him.
