After having had a bit of a thunk about this, I recon there must be an airlock into the bottom of the pool at the centre. Just how long you'd have to hold your breath on entry is anyone's guess. Plus swimming down to that and holding your breath while the aurlock empties would also be an issue.

Easier, maybe the far side has a lower rampart and steps up to the pool.

scary steps..... also doesnt the water slosh out over the edges and kill people below - like dropping a penny off the Empire state and slicing someone in half
