I am not massively knowledgable about the Great War, but how did the 50,000 die? If it was those trying to push the front line in a war of attrition, I can understand trying to save the lives of those falling into a trap (not saying the lives on the front line were worth any less, but trying to understand the thought process of those who made the decisions).
