Want Better Players, Not More Players

David Moyes has refused to accept that Everton have lost the battle for fourth spot in the Barclays Premier League to Liverpool as he revealed more “quality” players will be brought in for next season’s campaign.

Having seen his side suffer a Merseyside derby defeat last weekend, Moyes’ side faces relegated Derby on Sunday hoping to keep up with Liverpool in the race for the final qualifying place for the Champions League.

Everton have been hit by injuries to Andrew Johnson, Tim Cahill and James Vaughan over recent weeks, and the lack of resources has contributed to their current record of one point from three games.

Their dip in form has allowed Liverpool to take a five-point lead over Everton in the battle for fourth, and a superior goal difference that is virtually worth another point to the Anfield men.

That has left Moyes looking to the future for Everton, who should at the least be able to hang onto fifth spot and a UEFA Cup spot.

“I would say that maybe we don’t need more players, just more players with quality,” Moyes said.

“We sold James McFadden and then picked up some serious injuries to Cahill and Vaughan. That takes it’s toll.

“But I am happy with the numbers here, just that one or two have not worked or offered enough to the squad, that has effected things. We have always been looking to add to the numbers, but mainly to the quality.

“We lost the Merseyside derby last week, which gave Liverpool a five-point lead on us, so we must now make sure that we do not let the teams behind us close the gap on us.

“We are not out of the race for fourth, but it is much more difficult now. But we are still there and will keep trying to make it.

“We have six (games) left and four of those at home. We must make sure we win the home games and that will give us a very decent end to the season. We have a good opportunity to certainly get fifth, for sure.”

With the latest broken foot ruling Tim Cahill out for the season, there now is a clear chance for on-loan Manuel Fernandes to prove he is worthy of a permanent move.

With Thomas Gravesen unlikely to be offered an extension to his loan deal, Moyes is looking at potential strengthening to his midfield and undoubtedly wants a greater input from Fernandes.

He said: “Fernandes has not made as much of an impact as we had hoped. But he will maybe get his chance in the coming weeks to show what he can do.”

Everton have been warm-weather training in Marbella this week as Moyes seeks to recharge the batteries. And it has not gone unnoticed that Zenit St Petersburg are on the brink of reaching the UEFA Cup semi-finals having lost to Everton in the group stages.

Moyes said: “We would like to have still been in the UEFA Cup ourselves this week, but Zenit are still there even though we have beaten them.

“I always felt that they were one of the strongest teams in the competition, and I would be very surprised if they didn’t reach the final now.”

Moyes expects to have Andrew Johnson back from a groin injury while Victor Anichebe has recovered from illness to be in the squad against Derby.

He continued: “The players have been away and we would normally like to do something like this during the season. We have been in the UEFA Cup and we would have preferred to still be in it this week, rather than in Spain.

“So with six games left in the Premier League we took the chance of a break so that everyone is ready for the final push.

“The weather was good and we got some excellent work in. Now we are ready for the challenge.

“This stage of the season is not difficult if you are in a strong position like we are, down at the bottom in the relegation fight is difficult.

He added: “I have been in the position Derby are in as a player, and it’s not nice.

“But maybe it is a relief for their manager Paul Jewell and their players that relegation has finally happened, it’s over and done with and they are now preparing for a season in the Championship.

“Paul will be deciding what players he keeps on to be part of what he is doing next season, he will be looking very closely at them.

“They may well relax without the same pressure. But good professionals are always under pressure in every Premier League game, you always want to do well.

“You are always scrutinised at the top and bottom. So you cannot go into games being anything but fully committed.”

Wonder who that bit could be about?

VDM most probably, Fernandes or Gravesen?

Fernandes needs to prove himself, he has played better against West Ham and the [Poor language removed], we know he is a great player (most do - a few exceptions who are clearly clueless and should stick to badminton), he need's to show this.

We need more players too Moyesy, we DO NOT want to end up in this situation next season, a top 5 team need's a big squad to compete in all competitions.

We need at least 2/3 top top players that are realistic that is - Arshavin, Kallstrom, Kaka, Messi etc.

every january or summer we let more players go than what we bring in. im betting we will do the same again.

Cant help bit disagree with Moyes on this one. He contradicts himself.

“I would say that maybe we don’t need more players, just more players with quality,” Moyes said.

“We sold James McFadden and then picked up some serious injuries to Cahill and Vaughan. That takes it’s toll.

Right, so in terms of numbers we don't need more players but then you say two injuries 'takes its toll'.

Hhhmmm....

perhaps moyes doesn't feel some of the players on the fringes of the squad have met his expectations when opportunities have come their way. has gravesen done enough to extend or make permanent his loan transfer? has fernandes done enought to make moyes want to make another attempt to sign him this summer?

I would not even guess at what Mr Moyes has planed ,but agree as well as quality quantity is vital but if push came to shove I want quality first trouble is good players dont come cheap either transfer fee or wages so lets just see(y)

It's midfield where we've suffered really as the likes of VDM, Graveson and Fernandes havn't pulled their weight this season. All three have good reputations and they've failed to live up to them. The likes of VDM and Graveson have also failed to put in much time either so havn't even been around to share the workload.

I agree really. On paper the squad size is good, but when you've got VDM sucking wages out the club, and Tommy Grav, Manny Fernandes etc. not on form, it really kills us when we have a couple of injuries.

Also maybe we're over subscribed in certain areas compared to others. LB for example Nuno can't really get a game as he's got Baines and Lescott in front of him. Contrast that to say left wing where we don't really have an out and out left winger.

It's an interesting situation but I trust Moyesey to sort it out in the summer. The squad's been improving year on year and I don't see that stopping right now (y)

Was it just me, or was Fernandes showing some good signs against the [Poor language removed]?

Yer he looked back to his best, tryiung to move the ball forward, nice crisp passing, didnt give the ball away, even put in some challenges:o

i think people have been abit harsh on manny except for a couple of bad games i think he has been ok, he hasnt given the ball away as much as cahill, carsley, osman or pienaar and with pienaar his passing is 99% foreward.(he tries to make things happen)

people on this site are picking out individual players, i dissagree and think our tactics/team selection has gone all wrong especiall reverting back to this long ball bollocks.

we have a goalie who is not confident with his centrebacks ability on the ball so kicks it aimlesly down the field, we have two centrebacks who our great defenders but crap at passing and a defensive midfielder who is the same as the centrebacks this leaves a huge gap and the only way to get the ball to the strikers/atacking mids is the long ball which we all know doesnt work.
fernandes will take the ball off the centrebacks/goaile and pass the ball through midfield giving our skillfull players a chance to show what they can do instead of chasing lost courses and scrapping for the second ball.

Intresting Artivle in the Exprees:

Everton manager David Moyes is waiting for a response from the Goodison Park board after issuing his contract demands.

The Toffees boss has held discussions with chairman Bill Kenwright as he looks to settle his future.

Moyes, who is chasing a place in next season's UEFA Champions League with Everton, is eager for assurances that the progress he has overseen on Merseyside since taking over in 2002 will continue.

And having let his feelings be known to Kenwright, Moyes is now waiting for a response but he accepts that a final decision is unlikely until the end of the season.

Contract talks

"I have had a conversation with Bill and I will know more in the next couple of weeks," Moyes said in the Daily Express.

"We probably won't get down to any contract talks until the end of the season. The club know what I want.

"I have had an opportunity to tell them what I want them to do and I am waiting now on their response back."

Moyes, who welcomes Derby to Goodison Park on Sunday, has also identified a number of summer signings.

Summer signings

"I know what I am after," Moyes added. "Whether we can get them or whether they would be available is a different thing.

"I have signings that might not cost too much in my mind and ones that I think would cost a bit more.

"We will know soon what ones we will be able to go for."

Looks like its poo or get of the pot time for the borard and to extent Moesyey!
