Went swimming in the tarn halfway up Helvelyn, the water was disgusting, tasted of nothing but peat.

Seemed like a good idea at the time lol

In saying that I`ve been " wild " swimming in Snowdonia, the Yorkshire Dales and other places in the Lakes. Great fun on a hot day.

Oh the water was clear it was just about -1 billion degrees.

As I do a lot of hill walking and I couldn't seem to find a thread about it, I thought I'd start one.

In the next few weeks I am going to try and do this walk: www.walkingenglishman.com/northyorkshire11

Starting to get some preparation for July when I am walking the Yorkshire 3 Peaks.

But for anyone who already enjoys it and anyone that is interested; post any suggested walks in here, any tips and advice, pictures and routes.

Some years ago the Mrs Nigh and 3 friends of hers did the Wainwright walk and from what they say I'd definitely add that to your list

There's about 70 of them I think, just too intensive for me. The pictures the guy has taken from the peaks are absolutely stunning mind you.
Are you talking Munro’s now? As there’s only 14 peaks in Wales above 3000ft.

The challenge is to do all 14 in a single 24 hour push. You climb snowden and the clock starts when you touch the trig point. You finish the challenge at Aber falls. You cover 26 miles and 17000 ft of vertical ascent and then have a 3 hour walk from the finish point to the car park in Aber...It’s a mega challenge

I think it’s now being done as an ultra run too ?

The record is 4 hrs 20 minutes by a fell runner. Utterly unbelievable.. they are not human!

They’re just pushing the distances and challenges further and further every year.

There’s a whole sub culture of ultra runners who are just looking for the longest and hardest all the time.

Big money in it too for the elite.

Their training schedules are insane !

It looks worse than it is and coming down can be the hard part, rather than going up, especially when it’s wet.

The right shoes / gear is essential though and I never go out without a running back pack, full waterproofs, gloves, hat, energy bars / gels / fully charged mobile, whistle etc.

It’s really just speeded up walking, but with more stamina / fitness required.
Pyaaaaaaaaar tory you lad

What makes me laugh is that I set off for a day in the mountains with full waterproof kit, rucksack, food, water etc... and you quickly get overtaken by some 65 year old bounding past you like a deranged mountain goat wearing only a vest and shorts!
