2025/26 Vitalii Mykolenko

As fans we're always quite sensationalist. Hes been an ok full back for us and part of quite a mean defence. When he was out his loss was felt and we conceded a fair few more goals. The problem we have is he is limited and on top of that now is out of form.

We simply dont have another option at the moment to give him time out of the team to let him get back to at least the best version of himself.

That shot he had last night was borderline hilarious.

The beat version of himself is in a backs against the wall defense which we are no longer playing. It's no surprise at home with Garner at left back we look a much better team.

1 goal conceded in 3 games he's missed, and that was an iffy penalty
2 goals conceded in the 3 games he missed last season (Leicester (a), Newcastle (h) & Arsenal (h)

He's average defensively.
And terrible offensively.

The fact that Baines at 41 in the Icons match pre-season, looked 3 times the player, says it all.

Upgrade desperately needed, he would make a good backup LB, reliable enough to stand in IF needed. But in an ideal scenario, would rarely be needed.

We build around our left back far too much though. I don’t know any other PL team who does this. I feel like far too much of every PL game we have is just Mykolenko on the ball. Every time a midfielder gets it the default pass is out to Myko, the second Grealish gets it it’s pinged back to Myko, the centre backs loom to play out to him, even Pickford fires most stuff that way.

I could understand doing this when we had Leighton Baines in the team but it’s a bit ridiculous, no one else really plays this way.

He's always on the ball because the opposition doesnt bother marking him meaning hes always free.

He's should be a player you bring on with 10 minutes left to waste a bit of time and sure things up

Nothing more

Some of it is the pattern of our play though. We did it in Moyes’s previous spell and again under Silva. Midfielders by default look to the left back position rather than playing forward. Our plan A was to try and spring Baines or Digne into space. We don’t do it down the right hand side ever. The only time we did was that first season under Martinez when were truly balanced for once and attacked more evenly.

Mykolenko’s role in this team should be to get the ball and give it to Grealish but instead the onus is always on him to find a cross, make an overlap, thread a through ball and he’s one of the least equipped to do it. Meanwhile O’Brien and the other CBs just get away with turning inside and finding a five yard pass all the way along to Mykolenko. The move then breaks down and everyone curses Mykolenko but it’s just either poor patterns of build up play or compete cowardice from defenders and midfielders who can’t find key passes themselves.

Grealish passes to him as a last resort. You can see there is absolutely no part of Grealish that want to pass the ball to Myko. Understandably.

he should have no 'role' at the club whatsoever. The only reasonable place for him is on the frontline in Donbass.
