Best post I have ever seen.

In all fairness Saunders was on the BT equivalent of Soccer Saturday at the weekend and was very complimentary about how we were playing and how much we've improved this season.

Titles trumps everything. It ls why ALL club honours lists start out with them. There's a hierarchy of trophies, and the national title is at the top of the tree.

But dont underestimate the number of seasons played at the very top. We head that list. There isn't a club that's played more seasons in the top flight than Everton.

Villa have been out of the top flight for 14 seasons (two of them in the old third division!). That's over 1 in every 10 league seasons they've played has been played outside of elite football. We have played 4 seasons in division two. Everton are quite simply far and away a club with more obvious elite history than Villa...than any club in England.

Totally agree - win 6 games to win a domestic cup - you need to win probably 25 games at least to win the league. No comparison.

I am sure some of the older fans may be dismissive here, but here is another reason why I don't even think a European Cup should be valued so highly and equal to a League Title. I've contradicted myself a bit there as on an earlier post I did say the prestige of a European Cup was about level with a title, but after looking at the runs to get there, the more I think it is an overrated achievement.

Villa had to get past 4 rounds to earn a Final with Bayern Munich. They played:

Valur (Iceland) in the 1st Round. Valur have a current capacity of 1,524 lol.
Dynamo Berlin in the 2nd Round. They currently play in the 4th tier of German Football.
Dynamo Kiev in the QF.
Anderlecht in the SF.

So they played one game in the whole competition against a Huge European side and that was Bayern Munich.

In the interest of fairness, our own route to the Cup Winners Cup Semi Final was similarly easy:

University College Dublin in the 1st Round.
Internacional Bratislava in the 2nd Round.
Fortuna Sittard (Holland) in the QF.

After looking at this, I have far less respect for European Cup wins back then. No wonder Forest won 2 lol. I reckon Leicester would win it if they had 4 teams to get past starting with teams the same calibre that Villa played, especially when they strolled through their weak CL group. Also explains why 'The Hammers' have a Cup Winners Cup win, despite never having won an English League Title as they played a few teams we've never heard of and won the final against the Giants 1860 Munich.

En route to their UEFA Cup win in 1984, Tottenham won a 1st round game against Drogheda United 14-0. And they try and say they're more successful than us because they have more Cup wins. Kopites can dismiss our claims and call them bitter all they want as well, but had we been allowed to compete in Europe between 1985-1990 with our greatest ever team playing the likes of Lokomotiv Leipzig and Dublin's Universty team I am sure we would have won a few ourselves.

Dynamo Berlin, Dynamo Kiev and Anderlecht were all pretty big clubs back then. You cant compare then and now.

I miss those days actually. Dinamo Tbilisi, Steaua Bucherest, Red Star Belgrade etc. Boss exotic teams who you knew very little about so they had this great air of mystery about them.

We're a sleeping giant whilst 7th in the premier league. Villa are a comatose giant in the championship.

I know which position out of those two I'd prefer Everton to be in.

The real question is how do we get to be in the same category as the Real Madrids and Manchester Uniteds of this world. Because any team has that potential.

To be fair we were a whisker away from going out to UCD. However with confidence of winning the ECWC, i think we would have been in a much better and more relaxed situation in the EC in 86.
