We have a crap record for everything else so I fully expect the “ first team to have a 95th minute winner ruled out by VAR despite quite clearly having nothing wrong with it” record.

Won't change much, officials can use it selectively. Don't expect to see a dubious RS goal going to VAR.

Frankly, I’ve hated VAR from its very first use, and can’t see me ever really changing my mind.
I don’t need EVERY decision to be PERFECTLY correct.
I’m ok with an offside call going against my team by 2mm. If it’s tight, I’m accepting of it being a mistake, but a close call.
If VAR was only to be used to rectify clear errors, I could probably stomach it, but already we see that’s not what it is.
The audience on TV have no idea what’s happening, so I can only imagine it’s much worse at the match.

I don’t think it’s like the cricket or rugby where you get to see as the decision is being made, so you’ll still be none the wiser while it’s happening.

I like the idea of VAR so long as they can speed up the system to keep the game flowing.
I'm still bothered that it's far from fallible when it comes from getting an honest appraisal. I've seen already how easy it can be for events to be 'selectively' referred to it.
Of course it will be much harder for a VAR team to be bought off in secret, than it would be to buy a ref for a game - that much is good. However, given how much weight sky has in the game, it's clear that institutionalised bias can still exist through a season.

Exactly, it's a game played by humans who make errors and I've no problem with it being reffed by humans who make errors. I don't want goals ruled out if somebody gets a jump on a defender and half their leg is offside, that's football.

Evident in the Women’s World Cup the entitled bit.
The standard of referring was a huge talking point in the early games/rounds, and obviously VAR got in the way of most matches.
For some reason, despite having the same limitations in terms of pay, selection pool, and exposure, it’s not ok for women’s referring to be anything other than flawless.
Women’s football has improved enormously, but it’s still miles away from the standards of the men’s game for obvious reason of about a 100 year head start, so it’s ok that the women’s matches had periods of pretty poor play (though when it was good it was very good), but poor referring was derided.
Then in steps VAR and makes it even worse.
I’d like to do an experiment where you get a dozen pundits, including the ex refs on the telly, and show them replays of incidents in the box from the last 20 years or so, in isolation, and get them to decide pen or not.
They’d be all over the place in their answers, I’m sure of it.
Would also be good to try and compare with an opinion they shared on telly at the time, just for laughs.

Strange that eh? They should be instructed by the PL to have screens installed at their grounds.
Either you have VAR and screens or you don't. Why make an exception just for those two? Well, we already know the answer to that don't we...

There's a bizarre situation in Rugby League where you only have the Video Ref if your game is on TV, because nobody has a permanent big screen. So if you're on telly your match is officiated to a higher standard. That always seemed bonkers to me.
