Hey all, I'm pretty excited to say I'm making my first trip to the England and to Goodison at the end of April to see Everton v Fulham. I've never been anywhere in the UK so a bit confused/concerned about trains and the best way to get from London to the grounds and back.

I'll be flying into London, will have 2 days there to do whatever and then was looking at taking a morning train to Liverpool. Hanging out in town, going to the game and then trying to catch a train back to London that night.

Is that what everyone would recommend? Are trains usually pretty on-time?

Also I want to try to get the best seats I can. It'll be a while until I'm able to do this again so when it comes to the seats I'll pay for the absolute best I can get. What is that at Goodison? And whats the best way to get them?

Thanks for the help. Here's hoping that Everton move up the table before then!

Hello mate, the train service is very good. I sit in the park end and if you are willing to pay a little extra £100.00, you can have a three course meal in the captains lounge before the game.

I did the trip up to Liverpool and back to London once by train on a Saturday. It is dooable but as a lot of track work takes place on weekends you would need to watch out. I missed the first half of the game with the train going at reduced speed through the works. Check on track repairs when booking the tickets. Taxi from Lime street station to Goodison will be fastest once you get to Liverpool. Can be done but check first.

Ignore the doom mongers, My first match a Goodison saw us losing but the atmosphere, the history and the smelly toilets ( plus my first Pukka pie ) forever stay in my memory still. The hairs in the back of your neck will stand on end when Z cars start up.

Hi mate, enjoy the trip. I dont get to many games, but I do travel around the uk a lot.

Our train network is not as bad as some say, but some tips for you. If you can, buy your tickets as early as you can, on line from the US should be ok. They will be ££££ cheaper than buying at the station. (Bristol to London, £12.50 four week prior, £140 on the day, seriously).

Also, as one lad has said, getting up and back to London in one day might be a stretch. Consider coming up day before, or popping back day after the match.

Any rate, have a terrific time.

Be prepared with cash. At the gate, you will be required to deposit a minimum of £10,000 in the "we need midfielders to replace Neville" collection box.

Not sure how big your party of people is if just you feel free to stay with my family in Leicester for the night it's between London and Liverpool

Thanks all for the input so far, very helpful. Here's another, possibly newbie/stupid question, all future EPL games are listed as Saturday games though obviously some move to Sunday and Monday. When would that happen if the April 28 game were going to move? A, I'd love to catch more than 1 premier league game while in the country and I'll have both Saturday and Sunday free, and B, if they moved it to Monday I'd be screwed!!

Oh and believe me I understand the first post, as excited as I am I sure wish I could count on them being some place exciting in the table at that point but lets face it they'll be in the middle, like they always are. But I couldnt be more excited to see it in person, win or lose!

It'll be just me, it's a solo bday trip. I was planning on a somewhat nice hotel in London and enjoying whatever there is to do in London for a day or two which is one of the reasons I'm going to have to find my way back to London after the game, all my stuff will be at the hotel. But I will make sure to check on track work, that would suck. Not Toffees related but other than the obvious touristy stuff any recommendations for London?

I'm an American living in London. I went to a match last February.

My schedule was a little intense, but it worked out really well for me. I got at 5:30am train from London to Liverpool and slept till we arrived. I'd decided that I had to see Goodison Park first thing or I'd be bouncing off the walls, so I walked from the train station to Goodison, which took about an hour and was pretty straightforward. It was pretty deserted when I got there and I explored a bit and checked out the shop. I highly recommend you go on the tour: http://www.evertonfc.com/club/stadium-tour.html

You'll have to rearrange your schedule as it doesn't run on match days, but I think it's worth it! It was really exciting and you get to go everywhere and see everything.

I stayed at a hotel near the water - I guess it was because no one wants to go to Liverpool in late February but I got a room for less than half price and the hotel was nicer than I thought I'd be able to afford. I ran into Marcus Hahnemann in the lobby, weirdly enough.

I crashed at the hotel after the tour and then explored a bit in the evening.

The game I went to was at 3pm the next day but I remember I got there mega-early and no one else was around, so check the opening times. I sat in the front row of the Lower Gwladys, just to the side of the goal, and it was awesome. I will try and get the same seat the next time I go. It cost about £35, I think -- it was actually the cheapest Premier League game I've been to. You can read lots of different opinions on where to sit but I think the Gwladys End is good for atmosphere, if you want that.

I think you'll be able to catch a train back to London the same night, but you'll have to stick to your schedule and of course there could be random delays, though it was fine when I went. You also need to think how you're going to get to the station from Goodison as they are not close together. I just walked because I like walking and, um, couldn't be bothered to figure out transport/was slightly afraid of getting lost so make sure you know where you're going beforehand and not when the train leaves in half an hour.

Let me know if you have any more questions. I'm sure you'll have a great time :) I'm sure going in April will be nicer than going in February, too, ha.

EDIT:

I think they generally announce like a month ahead of time for changing the matches, though it varies. Like our New Year's game was moved from the Saturday to the Sunday and I think they announced it in mid or late November? Anyone remember?

It's not like baseball where 1 month after the end of the season, all 162 games are scheduled, announced, and on sale.

Oh and props for traveling alone - I did that and a few people there asked me why I would want to go to Liverpool on my own, but unless you're friends with diehard Evertonians who you can drag along I think it's probably better that way? I am a huge fan of sports pilgrimages..

I'd bang ya tickets on E-Bay mate you'll prob get £8 each for them :-((((((

Oh and Straqularsi too to take home with ya
