Unesco World Heritage status - Blame Everton

They have to justify their reason for existing. That's the sole reason for this.

In reality, UNESCO and everything it does and stands for has no value whatsoever. Life moves on; they don't recognise that, as their standard of excellence is antiquated.

If Liverpool did all they could to retain UNESCO heritage status, the city would be a technological, industrial and overall economic backwater.

They're an irrelevance who deserve to be laughed at for this, and to everyone's credit they are laughing at them.

Like everything else associated with the United Nations.

This thread is full of the exact shame behaviour as Trump devotees hating on the WHO and UN. Think on that.
This is not necessarily a bad thing, we can hate the sin (of being wham talking wowsers) in an abstract manner, but still love the sinner on a personal level...even though they're basically talking rubbish.
World Heritage - wrong, but wromantic.

(good wumming btw)

In the article the author highlights a previous piece he did for the guardian slating a project in Edinburgh.
Once again it’s his smug opinion but I’m sure he’s well payed and happy to walk about with a poker up his arse.
Wonder who/what he will have a go at next time.
I haven’t lost any sleep over it and look forward to sitting in our new home.

That's a compelling response to any criticism of the city not heeding concern to its heritage sites.

A living city cannot be forced imo stasis to achieve some arbitrary judgement from UNESCO for a title that has very little benefit to the city.

Bramley Moore Dock was a decepit site rotting surely into complete decay until Everton and the new stadium rocked up. More people will turn up in a season of home games than the area will have seen for years. The regeneration of that whole area is a necessity for the people living there and the city as a whole.

That stadium will be on every picture of the waterfront in a few years. It will be potentially the most identifiable building in Liverpool to people around the world. In 50 years time that stadium will be considered part of the heritage of the waterfront.

In summary, UNESCO can do one.

It's a shame but it seems organisations like this are against any sort of future development for the sake of preserving the past.

I'm all for preserving the past, but delapidated and empty docks do not attract people to places.
Let’s all live in mud huts forever.

Pretty much as above.

It’s not Giza, Taj Mahal. You can’t expect a city to fall behind and into a state of ruin. I remember growing up in the 90s, and Liverpool was an absolute toilet.

Got lucky to get that Capital of Culture and that was the catalyst for regenerating the city centre, which I believe looks fantastic.

UNESCO does lots of good things, but f they can’t see that derelict docks are not the way forward in 2021, then that tells you all you need to know.

Had the city been like New Orleans where they’ve built the culture into the city centre and it’s what they thrive on fine. But you can’t tell me that we shouldn’t be developing waste land, completely different if we were to knock down the three graces, then 100% totally agree, but they haven’t, what more do you want?

Nothing to do with Liverpool at all imho. Much more to do with a slap at the current UK government and their “relations” with the wider world. A UNESCO World Heritage site carries a certain prestige (if nothing else) and removal of it’s designation is to show that some other countries (Norway led this I believe) don’t like the way we are going about Foreign Relations / Policy.
Obviously Boris will need to get on to building the new yacht “Britannia” ASAP and reassert some colonial power. Johnny Foreigners etc.

You just never know Paddy what developments will blossom from BMD, the whole area will grow and flourish around the stadium, hopefully there will be a lot of things to attract visitors.
The ten streets development (basically a load of entertainment, shops etc around the ground) will be a massive boost for an area which is basically derelict right now.

The only reason anybody would go down there right now is if you are going to Costco, want a decent Greek meal or enjoy rats.
