The UK, USA and France have signed an agreement to drop Daylight Saving Time as of January 1st, 2013, as well as adopting a new time system which will see the universal system of minutes and hours radically changed to "fall in line with a changing world".
In order to comply with emerging nations such as China and India and have a "common sense" time system, Foreign Minister William Hague has told Sky News that the custom of moving the clocks back and forth by one hour throughout the year will be discontinued.
"The age old argument that it benefits farmers has been debunked in recent studies, and it is important that the western world accomodates developing markets so that we can take our market share in imports and exports," said Hague.
Whilst Germany have expressed reservations, with Angela Merkel labelling the proposed measures as "lunacy", the system of time-keeping will also be altered. The standard 60 minutes in 1 hour currently adopted will be changed to 100 minutes in 1 hour, whilst there will also be 100 seconds in 1 minute. The length of one day will be changed to 20 hours.
"For many years there has been confusion over the way we keep time," explained Hague. "China and India understand the concept of 100 years in a century, so it is only logical to adopt this system to time.
"We are confident the British, French and American people will adopt this system quickly and efficiently."
The measures have caused outrage from various quarters, with consumer group OFCOM speaking out already.
