David Moyes concerned about Everton's summer spending plans

DAVID MOYES has expressed his fears over Everton’s summer spending plans – even if they lift the FA Cup later this month.

The Goodison manager has already started pinpointing targets as he aims to bolster his squad after another successful campaign.

Everton will aim for their first major trophy in 14 years when they take on Chelsea at Wembley on May 30 and are intent on overhauling Aston Villa to secure a second successive top-five Premier League finish.

But Moyes is nevertheless concerned familiar worries over the size of his transfer warchest could compromise any proposed moves during the summer window.

“I would like to think it will be a busy summer in the transfer market but I am worried it will not be,” said the Everton manager.

“I’ve had a look and have got an idea of what I would like to do but I need to wait and see what finances are made available.

“I know that we are going to need more players. I think when you want to finish in the top four or five in the Premier League you are going to need more than Bosmans.

“They might help prop up the squad and we will need that as well, but I think in truth we will need to make signings to add to the players we have here and give us a chance of – at the worst – staying where we are, but hopefully progressing.”
Moyes is keen to avoid a repeat of last summer, when his plans were stymied by the board only releasing funds until well after the transfer window had opened.

It meant Everton missed out on a number of potential targets, although Moyes was able to wheel and deal approaching deadline day and snap up club record signing Marouane Fellaini for £15million from Standard Liege.

However, the Goodison manager has long been critical of the collective failure for the club to prepare for the start of this campaign, a point he repeated yesterday.

“Someone told me the other day if the season had started in October we’d be in the Champions League places,” said Moyes. “But you don’t, you start in August and you have to be ready.”
Everton aim to keep up the pressure on Villa when they entertain Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon.

The Goodison outfit are looking to complete a first league double over the Londoners since 1986 after Vedran Corluka’s own goal earned a 1-0 win at White Hart Lane in November.
And Moyes believes that victory was a major turning point in his team’s season.

“I thought that win was probably one of the most important wins in terms of where our season has got to,” said the Scot. “We had come off a terrible defeat at Wigan in midweek and it gave us a little belief.

“It happens like that in the season, something can change your season and kick start it but likewise something in the opposite direction, like an injury, can ruin your season.

“But I definitely think it gave us a lot of belief, we played well there and it got us back up and running.”

The defeat left Tottenham only two places above the relegation zone, but under Harry Redknapp the Lilywhites have since also turned around their season, reaching the League Cup final and now pushing for a UEFA Europa League berth.

“We will need to play very well because what Spurs have shown they have got really good football players and are on a good run, they only lost something like one in 20 matches.

“At the beginning of the season we would have taken being ahead of Spurs at this stage, considering what they have bought in, the way they have gone about their work, everyone was thinking they would be in the mix at the top.

“I’m looking forward to seeing Harry. He has done a brilliant job at Tottenham and turned them around since he took over.”
Everton will again be without neck injury victim Tony Hibbert, while both Lars Jacobsen and Leon Osman will have late fitness tests today.

We did sell James Beattie, Gary Naysmith, Simon Davies and Kevin Kilbane.

Well I know certain folk on here are fairly supportive of Kenwright and the like, but he has to see what is going on, or what is not going on. He can't be naive any longer. The manager will go and we will go back to what we were like pre-Moyes.

To be fair Ghost, its not as if Kenwright is delusional - he has reiterated several times that he needs to sell.

The more valid argument is, how much is he pushing for a sale?

I trust Kenwright has the clubs interest at heart and will look to sell to the right buyer. Am sure David Moyes will have a big say.

Essential to ensure stability is kept. Moyes wont walk with Kenwright due to lack of funds - he would walk if a meddling chairman came in.

Agreed. The most important thing is the stability of the club. We move forward every year, and we will continue to do so under the current Chairman and manager. A new owner will of course "quicken" up the progress, with injections of cash to buy ready made players.

What Moyes aid was that funds came too late, so why? That seems to me to be a question for the Board to answer and to deal with. TBH if it is another bad summer, I am beginning to think I can see Moyes chucking in the towel.

Well Kenwright saying something and doing something are two different things. Think about this. Outside of the top 4, which 3 or 4 teams are more likely to break up the dominance?

City = already got investment
Spurs = got investment
Villa = got investment
Us = no investment

Why? I honestly believe Kenwright feels he won't make money if he sells, so he is not in it for the money, he is in it for the status of owning Everton.

I've heard information from people who know Kenwright personally, and they all offer fairly different views on him. But what I have never heard is if he is actually looking to sell the club to someone who can take it forward.

Every year we are getting closer, but it's like walking into a glass door, we are never going to get through it unless we open the door. Kenwright can't open that door. This club is primed to join the elite, other than the stadia we are ready in pretty much all areas.

What makes you think the funds came late Rob?

In praising Kenwright, Moyes said people let Everton down in the summer (assume agents and the like) and its something he would learn from.

When did we bid from Ramsey?...
