Two up front

That's it though, I'm not bothered what's currently in vogue, only in what may work for us.

Oh I agree

I'm just explaining to you why it wouldn't happen

Martinez is a modern tactician who likes possession and loads of passing, so 442 probs wouldn't appeal to him anyway

I doubt he'd be able to successfully implement it

Plus, we'd need another top striker to go with Lukaku. Couldn't see Kone or Naismith being good enough in the role to second striker for it to work

3 up top?

I'd be really interested in seeing a 4-3-3 if we got a right winger, a la:

Robles/Howard
Coleman Stones Jagielka Baines
Mccarthy Besic Barkley
?????? Lukaku Mirallas

Besic and McCarthy bossing the midfield with Besic sticking a bit closer to the defence, Ross picking up balls from deep and driving, everyone else doing their thing.

Think we'd have to wait for Barkley to develop a bit more first though, but maybe against weaker teams at home trying to shut us out.

Would love to see Rom and Kev up top if playing a 4-4-2, Kev would be dangerous playing off the shoulder of their CBs.

We don't unsettle defences enough - defenders know it's their job to chase down passes over the top/down the channels but they hate doing it. Much better when the opposition play in front of you - as we have done for most of the season

Amazing even when we losing they don't bang two out and out strikers on. Always playing one in behind. With lukaku up there well worth playing a striker right up there esp at goodison

Don't think you could be successfull with a 4-4-2 these days.

Although I prefer a 442, this is due mainly to the fact we have Rom and he is best served with that set up IMO.

With all the bizarre selection decisions/formations I can't help feeling that we are witnessing one big experiment from Martinez and a main part of that is getting players used to different field positions and the key features needed to be successful in those positions.
Although risky as we all are seeing so far, if it does pull off he would have a squad of players capable of playing different systems from one week to next but more importantly to be able to adapt to tactical switches mid game.

It makes sense to want to adopt such an approach and in any ways it is the holy grail - easier said than done of course and he has been finding out which players have those attributes perhaps

I don't actually mate, Rom is well capable of playing up top by himself. You would get absolutley destroyred going 4-4-2 these days. It just couldn't cope with a 4-2-3-1 or a variation, either the midfield or defence would be flooded Prob both.

Personally I think he's ramped up his philosphey this year and decided to develop certain players into the system, we look a team who've got a bad culture shock - which is exactly what I think has gone on behind the scenes.
