....he certainly doesn't do it enough but he might have that dimension to his game.
Well... he did actually play as a number 10 in the SPL for a whole season with Hamilton.

*watches plotter brains ignite*

No, I'm not saying he could be our new number 10, just that he has played in forward positions before Bobby got hold of him.

....he played a pass to Lukaku that created a goal last season that was similar to Saturday's. It shows he has the capability.

Most of the possible replacements to the Barry/McCarthy midfield duo have had injury/offield concerns that have kept them out for much of the season so to date there have been limited chances to change it even Martinez had wanted to.

The only exception is Barkley but if we move him into midfield then we either have to change the formation or have someone else to play as the attacking midfielder and one of the options for that role, Osman, has been injured as well.

With some of these players getting their fitness back and an intense period of games coming up, with no international breaks to rest Barry, think we'll see a bit more variety.

But currently the Barry/McCarthy pairing is performing as well as it did in the 13/14 season.

Not sure how it works but have you seen where Galloway and Coleman are often positioned in our attacks/ when we score, they're parctically in the 6 yrd box! Maybe having the difensive cover allows them to move forward more freely.

I think what both those show is his ability going forward but not when he thinks about what he's going to do ... Apart from kone against Sunderland can't remember him with an assist where he had time to pick his pass.

....it's a very good point and one I was thinking about. He plays a high tempo pressing game and it's hard to get into another more claculated mode when you have time on the ball. It's a bit like that with some forwards, loads of pace to get into the right situations but don't have the ability to switch and be more calculated when applying the finish. The very best have that ability.

When Baines is back it's not inconceivable that we would have Baines, Stones and Coleman all in the opposition box from open play.

This is when having 2 DM's will really be key.

Play 2 CDM n we win then great!

But if we draw or lose.. Why play two CDM when we concede loads anyway. Disgrace.

Koff Roberto...

galloway could have had about 4 goals this season if his finishing was clinical. gets in some great positions.

Yeah he's certainly not shy about getting forward.

Which is why it's way too simplistic to look at the team sheet and think we're playing 4 defenders and 2 defensive midfielders in some kind of negative defensive line up.

We're not.

Both Barry and McCarthy take turns getting forward, usually McCarthy. And both spend a lot of the game covering for the runs of Stones, Coleman and Galloway ( or whoever players in defence). On Sat McCarthy spent half the game at right back covering for Coleman who was playing as some kind of inside right mid. And it's clear whilst they will drop back and defend at times our front attacking 4 aren't the best at defending and providing cover.

Sure, we could drop one of them and put a more creative player in there, would be beneficial whenj those players were making runs forward or starting attacks. But we'd lose out the cover they provide when other players get forward.

Besic, Cleverly and Gibson could probably fit in either dm role now and give a slightly differing balance without affecting the rest of the team too much. But Barkley would definitely mean we'd have to sacrifice the attacking plays of one full back.

I think at times we have missed Baines and Coleman getting forward to support the front 4 ( Kone, Del, Barkley and Lukaku). Since Coleman has been back I think we have looked more attacking, hopefully once Baines is back we should improve again.

I guess it depends on the personnel, if we have a LB and RB who get forward, then we need two holding midfielders, to help out the CB's.

If we are playing with more defensive LB and RB, we could take out a defensive midfielder and bring on another attacking player

The balance is good and it's not stopping us scoring, which was frustrating us at times last season.
We're currently joint 3rd top scorers in the league (10 in the last 2 home games doesn't hurt mind) and only 4 goals off top scorers.

When Villa were holding out on Sat for 15 frustrating minutes it crossed my mind immediately as all our threat was down the right with delboy, and Coleman - no one in front of our left back Galloway who looked exposed even v Villa.
I wondered them would it be better to start at home v the lesser teams with using two wingers e.g Delboy, and KM then if we go 2 goals up we always have the chance to take a winger off and fetch McCarthy or Barry on - Barry at the moment is captain so McCarthy is the obviuos one to stand down to try the experiment!

Couldn't we have KM on instead of Kone?
Ah, wait, no.. We'd miss the dance.
McCarthy it is.
