Lord of the Rings TV show coming to Amazon Prime
Amazon Prime is to produce a new TV adaptation of JRR Tolkien's bestselling fantasy novels.
The new show will take place in Tolkien's Middle Earth before the events of the first book in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring. It is planned to run for several seasons, with the possibility of a further spin-off series.
"The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen,” said Amazon's Sharon Tal Yguado. "[Amazon is] thrilled to be taking The Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.”
Peter Jackson's three film adaptations of The Lord of the Rings (2001-2003) starring Elijah Wood earned almost $6 billion worldwide, and won 17 Oscars, including Best Picture for its final instalment The Return of the King, the first fantasy film to win that accolade. Another trilogy based on Tolkien's prequel The Hobbit, also directed by Jackson and starring Martin Freeman, followed from 2012-2014.
The new series will be the first time Tolkien's stories have been adapted for English-language television, though there have previously been a 1993 French miniseries and a 1971 Swedish TV film set in Middle Earth.
Other original shows produced for Amazon Prime include the award-winning comedies Transparent and Mozart in the Jungle, F Scott Fitzgerald adaptation The Last Tycoon, and The Man in the High Castle, a sci-fi series based on Philip K [Poor language removed]'s book of the same name.
“We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings,” said Tolkien Estate representative Matt Galsor. “Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on JRR Tolkien’s original writings.”
