proximity readers have been around for yonks as well, large companies have them which open the doors as you walk up to them, you dont even need to take it from your pocket (depending on sensitivity setting), you just walk up, the door opens, you are clocked in (or out) and bobs your uncle, they will also put them around the place to monitor your movements, including the lavs and any skiving holes, big protests about it but all done in the name of ergonomics, to improve efficiency, you cant just leave it somewhere cos you will need it for opening doors. your card can be used for restricting your access and movement, effectively barring you from the canteen before your brew time and telling them time of entry and departure.

get with the tech, this aint 1984.
