Trevor Steven appreciation thread

McMahon was on £300 per week at Everton, at the same time David Johnson and Adrian Heath were on £900 per week, I
believe Howard Kendall offered Stevie a paltry rise which Stevie didn't accept, maybe Howard wanted to sell McMahon in
order to get the money to buy Trevor Steven, I know there was no love lost between Stevie and Howard.
Actually played a game against Steve mcmahon and his coaching staff when he was player manager at Swindon Town. Our school had a tasty 5 a side staff team, so a match was arranged as a highlight for the summer fete. We were not match fit, as the footie season was over, and it was the hottest day of the summer. The game (our deputy head said) would be a 10 minute game, so no worries. After 20 minutes the whistle went for half time. We were knackered and they were strolling. I don't think we touched the ball.
In the 2nd half I was the first to get the ball as I tackled Steve Mcmahon, and ran on towards goal, to the astonishment of the crowd - then the moment mentioned got to me and I realised I'd just tackled an international midfielder and come away with the ball, I hestlitated and my shot was tame to their keeper.

Two minutes later my achievement was recognised when I received mcmahon's elbow in my face. I was honoured to share that experience with do many Pro and international footballers. Didn't wash my face for a month.

We lost 5-0 in the end, with mcmahon scoring them all. Our keeper, was head of pe, was a semi - Pro keeper in his time. That helped a lot.

The meeja went to great lengths a few weeks ago to say that there was nothing wrong on the goal against us where... Who was it.... Headed stek 's arm while he had both hands on the ball and despite the clear foul, the goal was given.
Andy Gray headed that goal at the same time the keepers hands touched it : and he contacted the ball, not the hands. Clear goal.
Now on to 1966....

Except the media didn't really go to great lengths to say there was nothing wrong with the Boro goal. If by media you mean the blerts off BT, then yes but most of the other media outlets and ex refs, Halsey and Gallagher said it shouldn't have stood. I've seen many a pundit say Grays shouldn't have stood. Whatever, doesn't really matter, but for the original poster to infer the controversy has no 'justification' is plain wrong. Let's just say it WAS disallowed, would the OP be saying there was a conspiracy and that he seen absolutely nothing wrong in that goal? its plain for all to see, some, you get, some, you don't. Controversy, yes. Is the Controversy Justified? Of course. But we won. And it was boss.

Tricky looking very dapper and looking fit enough to play

....thought it was Ian Botham at first but I much prefer Trevor Steven. After leaving us I think he went on to win Championship titles in France and Scotland so he'll have a good collection of medals.
Does have a bit of an Ian Botham look about him now you mention it,aged like a fine wine though doesnt look very different from his playing days

Before my time but my dad and uncle still regard him as the best winger we ever had. One touch and he was already in space or bombing it down the right hand side. Plenty of end product, once he was in the attacking half it usually resulted in a chance or a goal.

Superb player. Another underrated and under used by the eternally stupid ingerlund set up. Complete package of a player as he had the work rate and end product to go with the flair.

When he was at Rangers a mate of mine told me that Graham Souness had said something along the lines of 'England must have a hell of a midfield if Trevor Steven can't get into the team'

Great player for us. He joined as I was leaving school and the success of 84-87 happened after 12 barren years of school-time. Who said being an Evertonian isn't character forming.

Anyway Tricky and Gary Stevens were an absolute delight to watch down our right side.

...Bob Paisley was a fine judge of player and we apparently stole Steven from under their noses. He was a fabulous footballer in a fabulous team. He not only scored goals, he scored important goals.
I can remember we were watching him burnley were at anfield a big turning point when he signed for us imo a great player, who could turn up in most positions great finisher too;)
